1 Vocabulary Words English Language Arts

2 Week of August 19 1. Clustering- webbing or making connections in writing. For example : 2. Allusion- something well known in literature of history. Example: My kitten’s name is Curious George because he gets into everything. 3. Hyperbole- extreme exaggeration. Example: The movie was so good, I can watch it a million times over. 4. Flashback-occur when the writer moves the reader from the present to an event or memory from the past.

3 Week of August 26 1. Personification- gives human traits to nonhuman things. Example: The trees waved when I walked by. 2. Metaphor-says that something is something else. Example: Her smile is a neon sign. 3. Simile-compares two unlike things using like or as. Example: The boy is tall as a tree.

4 Week of September 3rd 1. Fragment- a sentence that is NOT complete. Example: When the boy crossed the street. 2. Noun- a person, place, thing, or idea. Example: house, dog, Michael, love 3. Subject- it’s who or what the sentence is about. It’s the main NOUN in the sentence doing the action. Example: The mailman was late delivering the mail. 4. Predicate- known as a verb. It’s the part that says something about the subject. Example: Mrs. Carter is the principal at FSMS.

5 Week of September 9 th 1. Homonyms-words that have the same sound, but DIFFERENT meaning and spelling. Examples: ant/aunt, bee/be, there/their/they’re, ate/eight 2. Synonyms- words that have similar meaning. Example: car/automobile, small/little, talk/speak 3. Antonyms- words that have opposite meaning. Example: long/short, fat/skinny, even/odd 4. Homographs- have the same spelling, but DIFFERENT meanings and sounds. Examples: live/live, read/read, bow/bow, lead/lead

6 Week of October 14th 1. Cause and effect- set of events that starts with a cause and the effect that follows. 2. Compare and contrast- showing similarities and differences. 3. Chronological order-presents details in order in which they happen. 4. Spatial order- presents details according to their location. 5. Logical order- groups related ideas together.

7 Week of October 21st 1. Alliteration- is the repetition of an initial consonant sound. Example: "a peck of pickled peppers." 2. Imagery- is vivid descriptive language that appeals to one or more of the senses. Example: (sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste). 3. Accept – to receive or take what is offered. Example: I accepted his apology when he stepped on my foot. 4. Except- to exclude or to object. Example: I love skittles except for the orange flavor.

8 Week of November 4 th 1. Transition Words- helps connect ideas within and between paragraphs. For example: first, also, furthermore, however, since, conclusion. 2. Topic sentence-a sentence in a paragraph that expresses the main idea or point of the whole paragraph 3. Supporting Details- are details that expand on, explain, or prove a paragraph’s idea. 4. Narrative- used to tell a story or a sequence of events.

9 Week of November 11 th 1. Principal- head of a school 2. Principle- a rule of conduct 3. Stationary- in a fixed position 4. Stationery- writing paper 5. Threw- to tossed; hurled 6. Through- in one side and out the opposite side.

10 Week of January 27-31, 2014 Encyclopedia- is a book or set of books that gives information about a wide variety of topics. Dictionary- a book that lists words with the pronunciations and meanings. It’s in alphabetical order. Thesaurus- is a book that lists words and their synonyms and antonyms. Bibliography- is a list of books, magazines, articles, and other sources about a topic. Atlas- is a collection of maps Almanac- is a collection of recent facts and data about a variety of subjects. Web site- is a location on the internet.

11 Week of February 3rd Adjective Clause- is a subordinate clause that modifies a noun or pronoun ◦ Example: We saw an advertisement for a car that has aluminum wheels. Adverb Clause- is a subordinate clause that modifies a verb, an adjective, or an adverb.  Example: Trudy’s grade has improved since she cut back her TV viewing. Comparative Adjective- is used when two things or group of things are being compared.. Example: My suitcase is heavier than yours. Luis is taller than John. Superlative Adjective- is used when three or more things or groups of things are being compared.  Example: Factory Shoals is the best middle school in Douglas County.  Those murals are the most colorful that I’ve seen.

12 Week of February 10th 1. index- an alphabetical listing of subjects and their page numbers and found at the end of a text. 2. Conclusion: ending paragraphs 3. Bibliography- an alphabetical listing of sources used to write information and found at the end of the text. 4. Introduction- beginning paragraphs 5. Footnote- additional information about a subject found at the bottom of a page.

14 I will buy myself a new basketball. The store is by the park. Without your assistance, I could never have mowed the whole yard. Mr. Clay had plenty of students as assistants in clearing up the schoolyard. Spring weather can either be warm or cold. You should decide whether you want to play football or run track. The squirrel’s tricks in the tree were a very funny sight. Our new home will be built on that site. Example Sentences
