4 Lesson 18 – Zacchaeus 19:1-10 Jesus comes to Jericho v. 1 A man named Zacchaeus lives there vv. 2-4 He is a wealthy chief publican He is very short in stature He is interested in seeing Jesus, but the crowd hinders him…he climbs a sycamore tree

5 Lesson 18 – Zacchaeus 19:1-10 Jesus passes by…tells him to come out of the tree and take Him to his house vv. 5-6 “I must stay in your house today.” The Jews who heard Jesus’ words again grumbled about Him associating with a “sinner” v. 7 cp. 7:36-39 15:1-2

6 Lesson 18 – Zacchaeus 19:1-10 Zacchaeus admits his “willingness” v. 8 Give half of his possessions to the poor Make restitution to anyone he had wrongfully defrauded in his tax collecting Jesus declares “salvation” to his house… He also summarized His mission vv. 9-10

7 Lesson 18 – Zacchaeus 19:1-10 Zacchaeus shows faith & repentance Faith he was a “son of Abraham” cp. Rom 4:13-16 Gal 3:6-7 Lk 3:7-8 Repentance he changed his behavior & showed regret cp. 14:33 Ex 22:1

8 Lesson 18 – Another Parable 19:11-27 The Parable Of The Minas [Pounds] Jesus told this one because the crowd had heard Him speak re: Zacchaeus’ “salvation” Since He was approaching Jerusalem, they thought the kingdom was immediately coming He needed to correct this view v. 11

9 Lesson 18 – Another Parable 19:11-27 The Parable Of The Minas [Pounds] A nobleman was to receive a kingdom He calls 10 servants, entrusts each one with a “mina” [approx. 100 days wages] He will call them to account upon his return Citizens reject him…do not want him to rule

10 Lesson 18 – Another Parable 19:11-27 The Parable Of The Minas [Pounds] When he returns, he summons the servants to give account Some were faithful…proportionally rewarded One was unfaithful…he was punished The citizens were also destroyed

14 Lesson 18 – Triumphal Entry 19:28-44 Leaving Jericho, Jesus continues His ascent to Jerusalem…He comes to Bethany and the Mt. of Olives vv. 28-29a cp. Jn 12:1-11 He sends two disciples on ahead to procure the colt of a donkey He will ride into the city vv. 29b-34

15 Lesson 18 – Triumphal Entry 19:28-44 Jesus rides into Jerusalem vv. 35-38 His entrance was prophetic Zech 9:9 An exuberant crowd (coats, palm branches) They were rejoicing over all His miracles Their King had finally arrived!!! It is Sunday Jn 12:12

16 Lesson 18 – Triumphal Entry 19:28-44 The Jews wanted Jesus to restrain the crowds v. 39 Jesus replied “If the people become silent, the rocks will cry out.” v. 40 The “drama” was finally starting to climax!! cp. 9:51

17 Lesson 18 – Triumphal Entry 19:28-44 Continuing to approach the city, Jesus wept over Jerusalem…He knew her ultimate fate vv. 41-44 Again, Jesus foretells the destruction of Jerusalem cp. 13:34-35 17:22-37 21:5-36

18 Lesson 18 – Triumphal Entry 19:28-44 Jesus completes His “visit” to Jerusalem and the Temple…being late on Sunday, He retires with the 12 apostles to Bethany Mk 11:11

19 Lesson 18 – Temple Cleansing 19:45-48 On Monday, Jesus returns to Jerusalem He enters the Temple and drives out the money changers and those doing business because of the Passover Feast vv. 45-46 This is the 2nd time He cleansed the Temple cp. Jn 2:13-16

20 Lesson 18 – Temple Cleansing 19:45-48 Notice the difference… 1st Temple Cleansing Jn 2:13-16 “My Father’s house…” 2 nd Temple Cleansing Lk 19:46 “My house…” Jesus fully exerts His authority & identity

21 Lesson 18 – Temple Cleansing 19:45-48 He taught daily in the Temple v. 47a The chief priests & scribes plotted to destroy Him v. 47b However, they could not…Jesus’ popularity among the people hindered them v. 48
