1 Life in Ancient Egypt Religion
Create a chart on your paper using the four topics in red to the left. Then, after reading pp about Ancient Egyptian civilization, complete the chart with important facts and key ideas from your reading. For each topic you should include four pieces of information. 2 Egyptian Society Divided into social classes:
Top: Royalty, Nobles, Priests - Lived in cities or large estates Middle: Artisans, Scribes, Merchants - Lived in simple houses Bottom: Farmers - Lived outside the city in simple huts

3 Egyptian Families Rich: “Nuclear Family.” Mother, Father, Children.
Poor: “Extended Family.” Included grandparents and other family members. Women’s roles changed over time. Old Kingdom: Considered property of husband. Of course, women of royalty, such as Hapshepsut and Nefertiti, could become individually powerful. Middle and New Kingdoms: Legal rights, buy & sell property, testify in court

4 Egyptian Religion Polytheism: The Belief In Many Gods
Egyptian deities did not appear fully human, but rather had human bodies and animal heads. Egyptian religion focused on the afterlife. At first it was only for the nobility, but by the New Kingdom even the poor believed in an afterlife. Ra Horus Set Osiris

5 Egyptian Technology Written Language: Hieroglyphics
Images stand for ideas as well as sounds. Knowledge of reading hieroglyphs was lost for many years. It was not until the discovery of the Rosetta Stone in 1799 that modern people could understand the writing above! Very few people in Ancient Egypt could read or write. Wrote on tomb walls and on papyrus scrolls. Wrote prayers, as well as adventure stories, fairy tales, and love stories.
