3. By 1944, Germany controlled most of the countries in Europe. The Allies decided to invade the northern coast of France in an area called Normandy.

4. This invasion took a lot of planning because it involved huge amounts of equipment and soldiers. They decided to gather everything together in southern England and then cross the English Channel into France. Southern England English Channel France

5. On June 6, 1944, 60,000 American and Allied troops arrived onshore at Normandy and surprised the Germans. This operation was known as D-Day. It was the largest invasion by sea in history!
