Computer Aided Design and Drafting Introduction

Objectives Upon completion of this lesson you will be able to: Identify and Describe a Technological System Identify and Describe components of a computer system Describe CAD Identify and Describe capabilities of a CAD system Identify and Describe basic functions of CAD software

Technological System Inputs Processes Output Feedback

Components of a Computer System Hardware Software

Hardware Physical components of a computer system Examples: Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse, Hard drive, Motherboard, DVD drive, CD Rom, Flash drive, Memory, Video Card

Software Application Program Tools that help you accomplish your work: (designing, drafting, rendering, word processing, Ex: AutoCAD LT 2005, Microsoft Word) System Software (Operating System) Platform to run application programs: (Windows XP,Vista, MAC OS X)

What is CAD? An electronic tool that enables you to make quick and accurate drawings with the use of the computer. CAD is an acronym for: -Computer Aided Drafting -Computer Aided Design -Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD)

Capabilities of a CAD system Flexibility of editing- ability to make quick alterations to a drawing Units and Accuracy levels- ability to change and work with different units and create highly accurate drawings Storage and Access for drawings- save space, quick access, more organized

Capabilities (continued) Sharing CADD drawings- electronic files can be transferred easily and quickly from any location Design- Allows you to quickly change current designs with accuracy

Main functions of all CAD systems Draw- add geometry to drawing (lines, arcs, circles, ellipses, text) Edit- change elements of drawings (erase, move, array, copy, offset) Data Output- view/display functions, printing (zoom, pan, scale, colors)

Functions (continued) System Control- Setting drawing environment (layers, line types, styles, drawing space, drawing aids) Data Storage and Management- Filing, Saving drawings (open, saving, copying, deleting files)

COMPUTER AIDED DRAWING Initial cost of hardware and software Need to re-train staff Computers may crash and drawings are lost Security of files; files may be hacked Need to update software

Common CAD Commands beforeafter Circle beforeafter Box These commands draw arcs, boxes, circles and ellipses quickly and accurately. beforeafter Ellipse beforeafter Arc

COMPUTER AIDED DRAWING Common CAD Commands beforeafter Text This command allows to add text or writing to a CAD drawing For example adding the labels to views.

COMPUTER AIDED DRAWING Common CAD Commands beforeafter Fillet beforeafter Chamfer The fillet and chamfer are editing commands which allow you to create angled (chamfered) and rounded (filleted) corners.

COMPUTER AIDED DRAWING Common CAD Commands beforeafter Trim/Break The trim/break command allows to remove part of a line or object.

COMPUTER AIDED DRAWING Common CAD Commands beforeafter Copy The copy command allows you to create duplicates of an drawing or image without having to draw the image each time.

COMPUTER AIDED DRAWING Common CAD Commands beforeafter Mirror axis The mirror command creates a mirror image copy of an object about a specified axis.

COMPUTER AIDED DRAWING Common CAD Commands beforeafter Zoom/Scale The zoom/scale command allows the user to reduce or enlarge the size of an object.

COMPUTER AIDED DRAWING Common CAD Commands beforeafter Rectangular Array beforeafter Polar Array The array commands creates multiple copies of an object in circular or rectangular arrangements.

COMPUTER AIDED DRAWING Common CAD Commands beforeafter Hatch/Pattern Fill The hatch/pattern fill command inserts a range of line patterns to specified areas within a drawing/object.

COMPUTER AIDED DRAWING Common CAD Commands beforeafter Delete The delete command as the name suggests, removes a line or selected object.

COMPUTER AIDED DRAWING Common CAD Commands beforeafter rotate The rotate command allows you to turn an object or drawing through a specified angle.

The End
