Starter Q&A – What happened in Chapter 4?
50
Quote & Page No. Which character or topic this quote is about… What this shows us… P.61 “The smaller boys were known now, by the generic title of ‘littluns’” The theme of civilization, or power. This shows us that in society people are always grouped by appearance, size, religion colour etc. This normally leads to some sort of oppression. P.62, “Roger led the way through the castles, kicking them over” RogerOrCruelty Roger is not afraid to kick over the littluns sand castle as he does not respect them nor does he fear them. It shows us how it is human nature to be cruel to the weak. P.65 “Here, invisible yet strong, was the taboo of the old life…Roger’s arm was conditioned by society” Civilization Vs. Savagery Although Roger is now truly free from the rules of society, he cannot escape the fact that he was brought up to believe in right and wrong, and that wrong doing would bring about punishment. He has been shaped by the rules of England. P.66 “he capered towards Bill and the mask was a thing on its own, behind which jack hid, liberated from Shame and self-consciousness” Savagery Vs. Civilisation Jack feels liberated when he dons the mask. Whereas Roger was conditioned by society, now Jack is ‘anonymous’ he feels powerful and above the rules. He has become more savage as he no longer feels bound by law.

Quote & Page No. Which character or topic this quote is about… What this shows us… “This meeting must not be fun, but business” P.81 Ralph Ralph is starting to realise the importance of taking things seriously. They’ve been too reckless in the past. “if you were chief you had to be wise…only, decided Ralph as he faced the chief’s seat, I can’t think, not like Piggy” P.83 Ralph / Piggy Ralph realises how out of his depth he really is being Chief; Piggy is more qualified, but doesn’t have the strength of character “Percival Wemys Madison, The Vicarage, Harcourt St. Anthony, Hants…” P.93 Civilisation This shows that the littleuns, like Percy, have relied so long on civilisation to protect them, they cannot survive without it. Percy recites his address like a mantra, but it doesn’t make things better. “So remember. The rocks for a lavatory. Keep the fire going and smoke showing a signal. Don’t take fire from the mountain” P.87 Ralph Ralph starts to act like a real leader, taking responsibility for the group and making some good choices, he also shows authority for the first time. It doesn’t last long. ‘“What I mean is, maybe it’s only us” Simon became inarticulate in his effort to express mankind’s essential illness.” P.96 Simon / Fear / Savagery Simon is trying hard to explain the fact that maybe they’re imagining the beast because they’re afraid. All people can be afraid and all civilisations have their ‘beasts’. The Nazis had the Jews. The English had the communists. We all have our ‘ghosts’

Quote & Page No.What it’s about…What this shows us… P.103 “But a sign came down from the world of grown-ups, though at the time there was no child awake to read it” Language Techniques This links back to the technique of ‘foreshadowing’ which was used in Chapter 5. The boys begged for a sign from the world of grown- ups, they finally have one – but it’s not what they expected… P.107 “Neither of the boys screamed but the grip of their arms tightened and their mouths grew peaked….then as though they had one terrified mind between them, they scrambled over the rocks and fled” Fear / Sam ‘n’ Eric This shows the boys’ fear controls their actions. Rather than establish what is actually making the noise, they run away and imagine the thing is ‘The beast’. P.110 ‘”Conch! Conch!” Shouted Jack, “we don’t need the conch any more. We know who ought to say things. What good did Simon do speaking, or Bill, or Walter?” Jack / Democracy / Civilisation Jack is using the story of the beast to try and gain more power and influence over the boys. He is trying to remove freedom of speech so fewer people have the chance to contradict him.

85
Quote & Page No.What it’s about…What this shows us… ‘You want a real pig,’ said Robert, still caressing his rump, ‘because you’ve got to kill him.’ (126) Collapse of civilisation on the island. After the re-enactment of the hunt, Robert is upset and the group are uncomfortable with their behaviour – or lack of. “You’ll get back all right. I think so anyway.” p.121 Simon tells this to Ralph as they walk towards the mountain. Foreshadowing So far in the novel, Simon’s predictions have foreshadowed events. That Simon tells Ralph he will get home ok suggests that this may be true. “He would like to have a pair of scissors and cut his filthy hair right back to half an inch.” (119) Ralph – loss of civilization and order. [WHAT DO YOU THINK…?] ‘Use a littlun,’ said Jack, and everybody laughed. P.126 Jack’s brutality/lack of morals. Jack suggests next time they use a littlun. This shows Jack’s lack of respect or morals for others in the group and highlights his emerging savagery and desire to hurt.
86
Task How do we know that the boys are uncomfortable about their loss of control during the ‘game’ reliving the pig hunt? (p.126). When the boys track back toward the mountain – how does Golding use language to create a frightening or evil ‘atmosphere’? (P.135) Jack is described as ‘a stain in the darkness ’ – what does this suggest about him? (p.135) Applying our understanding of chapter 7 – chapter q’s Be prepared to share your answers!
87
Applying our understanding of chapter 7 – chapter q’s “That was a good game.” “Just a game,” said Ralph uneasily. “I got jolly badly hurt at rugger once.” “We ought to have a drum,” said Maurice, “then we could do it properly.” Ralph looked at him. “How properly?”. “I dunno. You want a fire I think, and a drum and you keep time to the drum.” “You want a pig,” said Roger, “like a real hunt.” “Or someone to pretend,” said Jack. “You could get someone to dress up as a pig and then he could act – you know, pretend to knock me over and all that –” “You want a real pig,” said Robert, still caressing his rump, “because you’ve got to kill him”. “Use a littlun” said Jack, and everybody laughed.
88
Applying our understanding of chapter 7 – chapter q’s “Behind them the sliver of moon had drawn clear of the horizon. Before them, something like a great ape was sitting asleep with its head between its knees. Then the wind roared in the forest, there was confusion in the darkness and the creature lifted its head, holding toward them the ruin of a face. Ralph found himself taking giant strides among the ashes, heard other creatures crying out and leaping and dared the impossible on the dark slope; presently the mountain was deserted, save for the three abandoned sticks and the thing that bowed.”

Quote & Page No.What it’s about…What this shows us… “What about my hunters?” “Boys armed with sticks!” (P.137) Jack & Ralph Ralph and Jack are disagreeing more and more and are close to coming to blows. When Ralph insults the hunters Jack is deeply insulted. “I’m not going to play any longer not with you!” (P.140) Jack Jack finally shows how childish he really is when his attempt to seize power ends in him looking foolish. He asks the boys to make him leader, but no-one responds… “So we’ll build the fire down here.” Said Ralph. Ralph Ralph’s desire to keep the fire going is still apparent on page 142 and he is determined to make it work. “But the…oh…the fire! Of course, the fire!” Ralph However, by page 156 Ralph has begun to forget the importance of the fire. The stress caused by the dramatic events have taken their toll on his state of mind. “Fancy thinking the beast was something you could hunt and kill…you knew didn’t you? I’m part of you” (P.158) Simon / The Beast / Fear Simon is ‘talking’ to the Lord of the Flies and is beginning to hallucinate due to the stress. Realization has dawned on Simon that the ‘Beast’ is the fear and evil within them all, and now events have taken a turn for the worst – things will get even worse.

112
Task Re-Read Page 168-170.
113
Quote & Page No. What it’s about… What this shows us… P. 170 “Surrounded by a fringe of inquisitive bright creatures, itself a silver shape beneath the steadfast constellations, Simon’s dead body moved out towards the open sea” Simon / The Effects of Conflict and Savagery / Religion Simon, probably the most spiritual character, is killed as a result of fear and the boy’s savagery. However, his body goes out to sea in a very calm way – has Simon finally found his peace? P.160 “Simon’s fit passed into the weariness of sleep” Simon Our suspicions that in chapter 8 Simon was having some sort of fit are confirmed. Clearly he was hallucinating and the words the ‘Lord of The Flies’ were saying were Simon’s… P.162 “He took the lines in his hand; he freed them from the rocks and the figure from the wind’s indignity” Simon This shows how even when Simon is faced with the grisly truth, that the ‘beast’ is a dead pilot, rather than run away in fear he instead chooses to help the poor dead person regain their dignity. P.163 “He laughed at Piggy, expecting him to retire meekly as usual and in pained silence. Instead, Piggy beat the water with his hands. “Stop it!”’ Piggy & Ralph It seems that Piggy is gaining more and more confidence the more time he spends on the island. Whereas Ralph seems to be losing his confidence and his authority.

Quote & Page No. What it’s about… What this shows us… P.174 “That’s right. We was on the outside, we didn’t see nothing. We didn’t do nothing!” Piggy & Ralph / Loss of innocence This shows us that Ralph and Piggy try and make excuses for their horrific actions. Yes, they assisted in murdering Simon but they can’t admit it, they have lost their innocence and purity. P.176 “he’s going to beat Wilfred” “What for?” “I don’t know” The Chief Jack has become ‘Chief’ almost a new character, he is cruel and spiteful and hides behind his mask, no one disobeys him. P. 186 “He was Chief now in truth; and he made stabbing motions with his spear. From his left hand dangled Piggy’s glasses” The Chief / Conflict Violence and conflict are working in Jack’s favour. He needed the glasses and took them by force, ensuring he is now the ultimate power on the island and truly ‘Chief’. Piggy is now completely blind.

Quote & Page No. What it’s about… What this shows us… “I’ll tell him what’s what. You let me carry the conch, Ralph. I’ll show him the one thing he hasn’t got” (P.189) Piggy & Democracy Piggy right up until the very end has a lot of faith in the conch and democracy. He believes the conch, the symbol of freedom will remind Jack of what he’s missing. Instead, it empowers Jack to destroy the remnants of freedom. “Roger took up a small stone and flung it between the twins, aiming to miss…Some source of power began to pulse in Roger’s body” (P.194) Roger & Savagery There is an inner conflict occurring within Roger – on the one hand he is remembering lessons long ago that taught him violence is wrong. However, as time on the island increases, his desire to hurt and kill increases also… “The tribe of painted savages giggled and Ralph’s mind faltered. He pushed his hair up and gazed at the green and black mask before him, trying to remember what Jack looked like” (P.197) Jack / Language techniques Golding no longer describes Jack’s tribe as children, instead he calls them ‘painted savages’ – this shows how far they’ve come since the crash. Equally, Jack is no longer recognizable. He used to be a chorister, a symbol of Christianity and purity. He’s now a black and green mask with the desire to hunt and kill. Make sure you find a quote that explains Piggy dying!!
135
Quote & Page No. What it’s about… What this shows us… “he had glimpsed one of them, striped brown, black and red and had judged it was Bill. But really, thought Ralph, this was not Bill. This was a savage whose image refused to blend with that ancient picture of a boy in shorts and shirt” (P.203) Savagery In the previous Chapter Golding frequently calls the boy savages. Now Ralph himself sees the boys the same way. He cannot recognize Bill, and he looks nothing like the innocent school boy who crashed on the island. “These painted savages would go further and further…(Jack) would never let him alone; never” (P.204) Jack & Ralph Ralph realizes how much danger he is in- Jack truly hates him. And he will never give up the hunt. “Ralph wept for the end of innocence, the darkness of man’s heart, and the fall through the air of the true, wise friend called Piggy” (P.225) Ralph / “The condition of being human” This final, emotional quote, shows how Ralph has finally come to realize the true nature of being human – the world is a dark place due to the evil mankind is capable of, and he will never be able to recover from this trauma or regain his innocence. Equally, he realizes that he never truly appreciated the one true friend he had.

The analysis of language will probably be of a section demonstrating the theme of conflict.

Explore the ways the theme of conflict is presented and developed in Lord of the Flies. “Read and understand the text, selecting material appropriate to purpose” “Develop and sustain interpretation of writers’ ideas and perspectives” “Explain and evaluate how writers use language and structure to achieve effects and engage and influence the reader” How will this task able you to do this?

Explore the ways the theme of conflict is presented and developed in Lord of the Flies. “Read and understand the text, selecting material appropriate to purpose” “Develop and sustain interpretation of writers’ ideas and perspectives” “Explain and evaluate how writers use language and structure to achieve effects and engage and influence the reader” By using PEEL to explain our quotes we demonstrate that our quotes are well chosen. By making interesting points about how we think Golding presents conflict in the novel and then trying to prove this by maintaining our argument we sustain an interpretation. By discussing language techniques, focusing on the language of one section of the book which links to conflict, and then explaining the effect it has on the reader, we will achieve this AO.

YEAR 11: Hour 1 - Beginning Assessment Preparation WALT Understand how to achieve our GTG on the controlled assessment.
154
Starter - Homework Copy the following down in your planner: Over Easter write a draft version of the controlled assessment that you will complete after the holiday. You will need this for the first lesson back – it is imperative you complete your HW – this is not optional. Why are we doing this? I have done everything I can to make sure you’re ready and have even researched what other schools allow their students to do – this is a popular way of making sure you’re ready. In the first lesson back you will be creating your notes sheet based around this essay – so you should have the best notes sheet yet.
155
Read through the task sheet on your desk. Put your name on it and look after it carefully – it will be handed in with your completed assessment before Easter. Be ready to tell me how confident you feel about being able to respond to the question. Task

Target Setting In Your Books: Create 3 bullet pointed targets you must ensure you do in order to achieve your target grade. Band 5 ‘sophisticated, impressive’ 25-30 A / A* Sophisticated interpretation of the events in Lord of the Flies and how they revolve around Jack and Ralph’s relationship. Sophisticated engagement with Golding’s ideas and attitudes towards the boys and what they represent, backed up with imaginatively selected quotes. You will explain how Golding uses language to help us understand what the boys are like and what they represent.
159
Language Analysis We need to analyse language in our essays, explaining how it affects the reader and how it links to our topic. You can all analyse and quote ANY part of the book you want, but I am going to be focusing on one section of the book so you can all have the bare minimum needed.
160
Language Analysis Re-Read pages 23, from where it says “The three boys began to scramble up” to page 27 where it says “…we’ve found out what we wanted to know”. Then re-read pages 196, from where it says “The blood was flowing in his cheeks” to page 199 where it says “…Ralph was a shock of hair”. Then do the following: 1 – How does Golding use language to present their relationship in the first section? E.g. how does Golding want us to feel about them? 2 – Do the same for the second section. 3 – Compare the two sections; how are they different and how does Golding’s language change with each one? How would a reader’s reaction be different for each one. Colloquialism
161
In pages 23 to 27 we see how Ralph and Jack’s relationship is initially presented to us. After deciding to explore the island with Simon’s help, they have a grand adventure, and Golding uses language to reflect the emotions and ideas contained within this section. For instance he uses a rather abstract metaphor on page 23 when he describes the jungle as “the looped fantasy of forest creepers” This metaphor has the effect of making the island around them seem somewhat picturesque and idealistic, almost like a paradise. The word ‘fantasy’ has mainly positive connotations and as such this contrasts greatly with the negative imagery used later in the novel. The boys also have fun when they push a boulder down a slope, Golding writes “the great rock loitered…and smashed a deep hole in the canopy of forest”. The use of foreshadowing here is clear and disturbing, the reader cannot fail to reflect on this after Piggy’s death and realise that even at this early stage of the novel Golding is presenting a relationship with grisly possibilities.
162
Language Analysis You’ve just done a language analysis! If you can take some of what you learned today and repeat it in your assessment you’ll do well!
163
Task Writing an introduction: Remember, a good introduction: 1) Explains WHY you’re writing the essay, 2) Explains WHAT you want to achieve, 3) States HOW you’re going to do it, 4) Is ORIGINAL! Example: The Lord of the Flies is a novel which explores many themes using events which cannot fail to shock the reader. These themes touch upon the very unique condition of being human and nothing demonstrates this more than the juxtaposition of the two characters Ralph and Jack. My aim is to explore how Golding presents this crucial relationship, I wish to demonstrate that he uses these characters to show the duality of man and how we are all capable of both good and evil. In order to do this I will analyse how their relationship develops throughout the novel with a close-analysis of language on two sections that show this is detail. You try!!

Preparing For After Easter WALT Ensure we have everything needed for after Easter.
166
Starter Get your work out from last lesson. You began a worksheet looking at language, now read over your responses to the first two questions.

Task Complete the Language sheet ensuring you use P.E.E. Then if you finish you should tackle the extension task. Doing this sheet will improve your CA Grade.
168
Golding presents conflict quite explicitly in Chapter 11, in fact the events of this chapter are a culmination of the conflicts that have occurred throughout the novel. Most shockingly perhaps is the death of Piggy, presented to us using graphic language, Golding writes: “His head opened and stuff came out and turned red. Piggy’s arms and legs twitched a bit, like a pig’s after it had been killed”. Golding uses this graphic language to have a clear and dramatic impact upon the audience, he wants the reader to be shocked and have an awareness of what bullying, aggression and conflict can lead to. He also used a simile in comparing the death to that of a pig’s. This comparison is clearly ironic, as Jack’s ‘tribe’ have become excellent at killing pigs. It is also an example of an ‘anthropomorphism’, as Piggy is compared to an animal. This highlights how Golding presents to us the idea that we are all indeed savage creatures, prone to violence and conflict. In this scene Piggy dies, but so does democracy. The shell is destroyed alongside Piggy’s frail body; Golding writes: “The conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist”. Golding uses very vivid language to describe this event, and uses hyperbole so that the reader has a clear understanding of how freedom and democracy have been utterly destroyed. I believe Golding is presenting to us how fragile and weak democracy is, and how conflict has the potential to destroy the things we prize the most. It is also no coincidence that the conch is destroyed at the same time as Piggy dies; the two are linked and Piggy more than anyone relied upon democracy for freedom and protection. With the death of democracy, Piggy loses everything.

Task Writing an introduction: Remember, a good introduction: 1) Explains WHY you’re writing the essay, 2) Explains WHAT you want to achieve, 3) States HOW you’re going to do it, 4) Is ORIGINAL! Example: The Lord of the Flies was written during a time of great conflict, Golding himself fought in World War 2 and was traumatized by what he saw there. The theme of conflict is still very relevant today. I am hoping to analyse the way Golding presents conflict in the novel, linking the theme to Golding’s own life and to determine what message he was trying to convey. I shall be looking at various conflicts within the novel and determining what Golding is presenting with these. You try!!
