American Folk Pottery: Traditional Southern Face Jugs

Depicting a face on jugs and jars is neither new nor rare. For centuries, anthropomorphic pottery has been made in England, Germany, Peru, Japan, Africa, Egypt and Mexico. Their uses have ranged from ritualistic and funerary to honoring nobility. In the United States, face jugs and vessels were made beginning around 1810, and the southern region has been the world’s most prolific region for face vessels. http://video.pbs.org/video/1918318256/video.pbs.org/video/1918318256

 You will create your own face jug relating to the traditional Southern Face Jugs.  You will base your piece on your silly selfie, or swap selfies with a friend. (It must be someone in this class so the reference is always in front of you.)  What do you want to say about yourself or your friend??? Make it personal.

Consider adding “extras” to make it more expressive.

 We will use brown stoneware clay for strength and a warm tone prior to glazing.  You will start with a jug constructed with coils. KEEP IT SOFT! You will sculpt the face by pushing in or out of the jug, adding extra clay whenever necessary.  Your jug needs to be a minimum of 12” tall.  You may or may not choose to add a handle.

Awesome, yes, but does not fit the criteria. Your face jug must represent a human…no characters.
