1984 is also about a different futuristic society that was made into a movie. The author, George Orwell, believed that what happened in his book would truly come to pass in America around the year 1984. It is a very sad book where the corrupt government always wins.

Brave New World is another book that has to do with a futuristic society. It was also made into a movie. It is a story about a society that alters the genes in a human while it is a fetus to match its job in life. It is a world where there is no pain and hurt and everyone takes ‘happy pills’. The big question is if you never feel sadness, is it possible to know that your truly happy?

All of these books/ movies are examples of different authors opinions of what could happen to society when corrupted by greed, power, and the need for perfection.

 The film has already developed a huge fandom › Tickets for the opening weekend (on sale today) are said to be sold out within the first two months.  The book is a USA Today and The New York Times Best Seller. › It was on The New York Times list for over 100 consecutive weeks as of September 2010 But WHY? Why is it so popular and what does it have to do with Mass Communication?

Needs : The Hunger Games offers several characters that posses glorified concepts(pure humility, fame, sacrifice, bravery) that, in real life, we see far too rarely. Fears : Suzanne Collins skillfully addresses America’s fear of losing it’s independence and democracy by personifying a dystopian that is “governed” by a cruel, wealthy community called, “The Capital” and its leader, President Snow. Anxieties : A running theme in this fictitious future story is Reality TV and its power over the citizens of the Capital as both entertainment and a tool. Are we ruining the lives of others for our entertainment? MTV’s Real World Jersey Shore  All art that become extremely popular can tell us something about who we are and what we’re feeling as a society; including our needs, fears, and anxieties. › Shmoop.com

MTV’s “Real World” has been on television since the early 90’s and each year places it’s contestants in emotionally and physically dangerous situations for the viewers’ amusement.

Jersey Shore has been an extremely popular topic of comedic sketches, and even though we enjoy these clips, do we fail to think about how the actors on the show may feel knowing the whole country is laughing at them? (Watch South Park’s clip of their version of Snooki)

 The Hunger Games serves as motivation to prevent such overbearing power  It supports human understanding  Katniss Everdeen displays admirable, personable qualities; sending the message that with perseverance and good deeds, justice will prevail against that which derails it

Today, we’ve… Explored Suzanne Collins’ book (plot and movie-hype) Similar dystopian novels 1984 Brave New World The Effects of The Hunger Games on society as a mass As a reflection and motivator

Any questions?
