FRACTION BASICS DAY 2 A MILLION BUZZARDS ARE WATCHING YOU TO SEE IF THEY CAN EAT YOU IF YOU PASS OUT DURING MATH CLASS

WHAT ARE EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS? Equivalent fractions are fractions that are different names for the same models.

WHAT ARE EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS? Equivalent fractions are fractions that are different names for the same models. 1/2 3/6 6/12 12/24 24/48 48/96

IS THERE A LIMIT TO HOW FAR WE CAN GO WITH EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS? 48/96 Let’s try and see! 96/192 Well we are already at 96/192… It’s getting hard to show these with pictures now. Let’s do some math!!!

HOW FAR CAN WE GO WITH EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS Well we started with this fraction x3 x2 If all we are doing each time is multiplying, is there any limit to how many times we can multiply? In fact we can multiply by any number we want as long as we multiply the top and bottom by the same number. x8 x13 x4

IN YOUR OWN WORDS EXPLAIN EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS IN YOUR INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK Points to Consider: Equal value fractions Infinite number of “names” for the same fraction We create them by multiplying the numerator and denominator by the same number They have the same shaded model except the shaded areas are just broken down into smaller pieces

BRAIN BREAK!!! WHAT DO YOU SEE?

YOU CAN THINK OF FRACTIONS LIKE A TRAIN TRACK

SIMPLEST FORM A fraction is in simplest form when the numerator and denominator have only the number one as a common factor & the number is NOT AN improper fraction

BRAIN BREAK!!!

CREATE AN EQUIVALENT FRACTION POSTER! 1. Start by choosing a fraction in simplest form and draw a model of it. Keep all of the shaded areas to one side. (Choose one of the more simple fractions.) 2. Divide your model into smaller equal parts again and again to create equivalent fractions 3. Write a list of your fractions and what you would have to multiply the numerator and denominator by in order to create each of your equivalent fractions 5. Make sure that your poster is both colorful and neat! Do the coloring last so you don’t run out of time EXAMPLE POSTER 4. Write an explanation of equivalent fractions so that someone outside this class would understand Equivalent Fractions Explanation: Yadda, yadda, yadda. Why are you looking at this... It’s not going to help you. Look at your notes and stop stealing my ideas. Yeah I’m talking to you. Yeah, you, the wierdo reading this. Yeah, you heard me. Stop reading this. Why are you still reading this. Don’t make me come out there! If you don’t stop reading this right now…That’s it!!!!
