1 The Ocean By: Nathaniel Hawthorne
Samantha Lanham

2 Chord A man steps out of sunlight, sunlight that streams like grace, still gaping at blue sky staked across the emptiness of space, into a history where shadows assume a human face. A man slips into silence that began as a cry, still trailing music although reduced to the sigh of an accordion as it folds into its case. The Ocean

3 BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
Nathaniel was the only son, and had two sisters. His father died when he was 4. He died at sea of yellow fever. A leg injury at early age left Nathaniel immobile for several months, and this is when he became interested in reading. His wealthy uncles sent him to college , but he missed his mother and two sisters and returned home for a 12 yr stay. Health and looks began failing, hair turning white and slowly losing thoughts. Hawthorne refused to see a doctor, and later died in sleep in 1864.

4 Structures of the poem:
The Ocean has its silent caves, Deep, quiet, and alone; Though there be fury on the waves, Beneath them there is none. The awful spirits of the deep Hold their communion there; And there are those for whom we weep, The young, the bright, the fair. Calmly the wearied seamen rest Beneath their own blue sea. The ocean solitudes are blest, For there is purity. The earth has guilt, the earth has care, Unquiet are its graves; But peaceful sleep is ever there, Beneath the dark blue waves. Hawthorne uses 2 stanzas, and has a total of 16 lines. This poem is a lyric poem because the author expresses his mood towards earth and the ocean. Has a rhyme scheme of 6 different rhyming pairs. 2 sets of approximate rhyme

5 Speaker of the poem: The speaker of the poem is a family lost at sea or have had a family member die on sea. The poem uses depressed language I sense that it is something bad that has happened before because of the clues. They have a dark style and make it seem depressing.
