Motion of Objects Day 3 Comprehensive Science 1 Periods 1, 2, 4, 5

Bell Ringer Essential Question What is the most important information to add to the answer of a word problem?

Bell Ringer Answer The Units! The Units!

Vocabulary Test Take 5 minutes to study – I’m starting a timer! Take 5 minutes to study – I’m starting a timer! Clear off your desk except for a paper and pencil. Clear off your desk except for a paper and pencil. When you are done, turn it in. When you are done, turn it in. Take a puzzle Take a puzzle

Period 5 only: Last class: Alyssa C walked 3 kilometers in 30 minutes. How fast did she walk? 1. What is it asking for? speed 2. Write the formula s=d/t 3. Circle numbers and units 4. Identify concepts 5. Plug numbers in to formula s= 3km/30min 6. Calculate 3km divided by 30min is 0.1km/min 7. Always write your units!! Time Distance

Book Reading Librarians, please put a stack of 4 books on each table. Librarians, please put a stack of 4 books on each table. Turn to page 261, Chapter 8 Lesson 1. 7 Notes on Motion: REFERENCE POINT: REFERENCE POINT: the place at which you start describing motion.

Describing Types of Speed: REFERENCE POINT: REFERENCE POINT: the place at which you start describing motion. CONSTANT SPEED CONSTANT SPEED when an object moves the same distance in the same amount of time. CHANGING SPEED CHANGING SPEED when the motion of the object changes from it’s earlier motion AVERAGE SPEED AVERAGE SPEED Average speed = Total distance/ total time INSTANTANEOUS SPEED INSTANTANEOUS SPEED speed calculated at one instant in time.

Describing Types of Velocity: CONSTANT VELOCITY CONSTANT VELOCITY when an object moves the same speed and does not change direction CHANGING VELOCITY CHANGING VELOCITY when either speed or direction of the object changes from it’s earlier motion

Describing Types of Acceleration: POSITIVE ACCELERATION POSITIVE ACCELERATION when an object speeds up, it’s acceleration is in the same direction of it’s motion NEGATIVE ACCELERATION NEGATIVE ACCELERATION when an object slows down, it’s acceleration is in the opposite direction of it’s motion

Graphing Motion: Distance vs. time graphs are just like other graphs, so let’s practice. Distance vs. time graphs are just like other graphs, so let’s practice. Let’s graph the data on this chart. What does your line look like? This is constant speed Time(hours)Distance(km) 0 hr 0 km 1 hr 8 km 2 hrs 16 km 3 hrs 24 km 4 hrs 32 km

Graphing Motion: Let’s graph the data on this chart. Let’s graph the data on this chart. What does your line look like? This is changing speed Time(hours)Distance(km) 0 hr 0 km 1 hr 8 km 2 hrs 10 km 3 hrs 11km 4 hrs 18 km

You try Graphing Motion: Try graphing the data on this chart. Try graphing the data on this chart. Can you answer these questions? 1. What kind of speed is this? 1. What kind of speed is this? Constant or changing? 2. What kind of motion is shown between points B - D ? 3. What motion is shown between points D-G? 4. What is the average speed of this object? 5. Does this object show positive or negative acceleration? PointsTime(minutes)Distance(meters) A 0 min 0 m B 1 min 5 km C 2 min 5 km D 3 min 5 km E 4 min 8 km F 5 min 14 km G 6 min 22 km
