DNS/IP

WHAT IS DNS?...IP? Domain Name System (DNS) is a database system that translates a computer's fully qualified domain name into an IP address. An IP (short for Internet Protocol address) can simply be define as the “corresponding address” that each Networked computer use to locate and connect to each other.

HOW DOES IT WORK? We use the internet as the main door to enter the Web. The web is an infinite world. Now, each website has its own “IP” or address which contains a number. An example: To buy stuff online we would usually go to Amazon and we would type the DNS: www.amazon.com But what’s behind those letters and dots is the IP, which is the real address for this specific website (207.171.166.48). www.amazon.com

…IN A MUCH SIMPLER WAY… Just like a street address determines the recipient of a letter, an IP address (short for Internet Protocol address) is used to identify computers on the Internet. When your computer sends a request, such as a Google query, it tags the request with its IP address in order for the response to be sent back to your computer -- just like a return address on a letter…this is known as “reverse DNS”

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?...TO SUM EVERYTHING UP… …Because Networked computers use IP addresses to locate and connect to each other, but IP addresses can be difficult for people to remember DNS is like a phone book for the Internet. If you know a person’s name but don’t know their telephone number, you can simply look it up in a phone book. DNS provides this same service to the Internet In a much simplier way…without a DNS…it would harder to find an specific IP for a website.
