Instructions for using this template. Remember this is Jeopardy, so where I have written “Answer” this is the prompt the students will see, and where I have “Question” should be the student’s response. To enter your questions and answers, click once on the text on the slide, then highlight and just type over what’s there to replace it. If you hit Delete or Backspace, it sometimes makes the text box disappear. When clicking on the slide to move to the next appropriate slide, be sure you see the hand, not the arrow. (If you put your cursor over a text box, it will be an arrow and WILL NOT take you to the right location.)

Choose a category. You will be given the answer. You must give the correct question. Click to begin.

Soil Composition Soil Horizons Preventing Erosion Describing Soil Vocabulary 10 Point 20 Points 30 Points 40 Points 50 Points 10 Point 20 Points 30 Points 40 Points 50 Points 30 Points 40 Points 50 Points Causes of Erosion

This type of sediment found in soil has the largest particle size.

What is sand?

Another name for organic matter, this material found in soil is essential for providing nutrients.

What is humus?

These are the four major components of soil.

What are sand, silt, clay, & organic matter (humus)

This material found in soil is composed of decaying plants and animals.

What is organic matter or humus?

Sand, silt, & clay are all particles of sediment found in soil as a result of this earth process.

What is weathering?

This soil horizon is composed of large pieces of rock that have not been exposed to weathering.

What is bedrock (D Horizon)?

These are the four horizons of soil found in order beginning at the surface of Earth.

What are Topsoil (A), Subsoil (B), Parent Material (C), & Bedrock (D)?

This material is composed of leaves, twigs, and other organic material that covers the ground and prevents erosion.

What is litter (ground cover)?

This horizon earned its name because it supplies the rock found in two other layers.

What is parent material (C Horizon)?

This process removes and transports some nutrients from the topsoil to the subsoil.

What is leaching?

This human activity contributed to the Dust Bowl because all groundcover and organic matter was removed.

What is farming?

What is overgrazing?

This human activity removes organic matter from the soil, which reduces its open structure and water holding abilities.

What is farming or agricultural cultivation?

What is forest harvesting?

What is construction or strip mining?

During the construction process, this method is used to prevent loose sediment from eroding.

What is wetting or spraying the piles of loose sediment?

What are wind breaks?

What is terracing?

What is contour farming?

What is no-till farming?

This is the major type of soil found in Georgia.

What is temperate soil?

This method of describing soil requires scientists to apply pressure to the soil in order to see how easily it breaks.

What is soil consistence?

This method of describing the soil in an area requires scientists to rub wet soil between his/her fingers.

What is soil texture?

Scientists often use a chart to correctly describe this soil characteristic.

What is soil color?

This factor affects the temperature and moisture content of soils around the world.

What is climate?

This is a mixture of weathered rock, organic matter, minerals, water, & air.

What is soil?

This part of the scientific method is where scientists use data to determine whether or not their hypothesis are correct.

What is the conclusion?

This is a possible solution to a problem or question.

What is a hypothesis?

This is known as the process of breaking down large rocks into smaller pieces.

What is weathering?

This is known as a combination of all four soil horizons.

What is a soil profile?

Make your wager & choose the team mate who will answer for your team.

Step 1: A plant or animal dies Step 2: Decomposers break the organic matter down. Step 3: Humus eventually becomes nutrients found in soil. Step 4: New plants absorb the nutrients and grow. Step 5: The new plants eventually die. Step 6: Repeat steps 1-5.

What is the nutrient cycle of soil?
