Respiratory System By: Jennie Powell & Brooke Miller

Primary Functions  2 purposes  Exchange mechanism, Oxygen Carbon Dioxide  Oxygen into the blood  Cooling system -Pants to cool themselves off -Warm air is exchanged from the body for the cooler outside air.

Major parts related  Nose- traps floating dust in hairs  Mouth- an airway; important when breathing hard and heavy  Larynx (voice box)  Intercostal muscles- pull ribs up when inhaling  Diaphragm- pulls base of chest down when inhaling  Pharynx (Throat)  Trachea (Windpipe)  Pulmonary arteries- brings low oxygen blood to lungs  Pulmonary vein- takes high oxygen blood back to the heart  Bronchi- main air tube to each lung left lung- 2 lobes  Ribs- protects lungs

Facts  A puppy has a fully functional respiratory system after taking its first breath.  Dogs don’t have sweat gland anywhere besides the pads of their feet.  If carbon dioxide were allowed to accumulate in the body, it would be poisonous  The capillaries in the lungs would extend 1,600 kilometers if placed end to end.  The lungs are the only organs that can float on water.

Additional Information How the respiratory system works:  1. Dog inhales  2. Goes through nose, pharynx, and larynx then to the trachea/  3. The trachea carries the air to the bronchi, supplies the lungs  4. Air exchange occurs in the aveoli  5. Used air follows the opposite path outward

New Terminology  external respiration- the bodily process of inhalation and exhalation  respiratory zone- Includes the respiratory bronchioles, alveolar ducts, alveolar sacs, and alveoli, is the only site of gas exchange.  pharynx- the passage to the stomach and lungs  larynx- a cartilaginous structure at the top of the trachea  trachea- membranous tube with cartilaginous rings that conveys inhaled air from the larynx to the bronchi
