1 NATIONAL SERVICE TRAINING PROGRAM PREPARATORY LEADERSHIP UNDERTAKING FOR SOPHOMORES Task-Based Training for LTS Remedial for Non- Readers November 17, 2012 2nd Semester, SY

2 OBJECTIVES At the end of the sessions, students are expected to:
Identify the topics for the 2nd sem Identify ways to creatively teach these topics Prepare the necessary materials for the corresponding topics Review the mechanics of the Pre & Post Tests

3 PROGRAM FLOW - Opening Prayer Creative Teaching World of Words
Tips from our teachers Presentation of the topics - CLOSING PRAYER

4 CREATIVE TEACHING

5 What is creative teaching?
Pair and share What is creative teaching? Materials needed: Whistle or bell Instruction: Each student shall find a pair. Assign letters to the pair, student a and student b. In 1 minute, A will interview B. “What is creative teaching?” B will interview A also on the same question. After 1 minute, Facilitator will call a random student A. He/she will share B’s answer to the class. (same goes to student B) Synthesis: Creative teaching is also cooperative learning.

6 COOPERATIVE LEARNING Positive interdependence
Individual Accountability Equal Participation Simultaneous Interaction Keypoints for the formator: Summarize the definitions shared by the students. Provide the principles behind cooperative learning.

7 Positive Interdependence
The success of every team member is not possible without he success/contribution of the other members.

8 Individual Accountability
To ensure that everyone contributes, no one is a free loader and no one is a work horse.

9 Equal Participation Everyone is a star! ★

10 Simultaneous Interaction
Everyone can share even in a short span of time!

11 Let’s try something… - Think of ways to creatively teach children
For facilitator: Divide the class into 3-4 groups. Each group will think of ways/ideas to creatively teach children. Each idea should have set instructions. The groups will take turns sharing their ideas. No two (or three or four) groups shall have the same idea. The group will get a point for each idea. The group with the most ideas wins the game! 

12 WORLD OF WORDS

13 3 Stages of Reading (Charles Fries)
Stage 1: The Transfer Stage (Learning to Read) Stage 2: The Productive Stage (Reading with comprehension) Stage 3: The vivid imaginative realization of vicarious experience (Reading to learn) Stage 1: The children learn the visual symbols/ letters that stand for auditory symbols (oral language). Meaning, reading is just a process of making out sounds from letters, or simply put, decoding. This is also known as the learning to read stage, which is what your tutees are currently in. This is an important thing to note because you may experience frustrations as to why your tutees are still having a hard time reading. This will help you gauge or think of creative activities that will help their decoding skills develop into comprehension. Stage 2: Reading becomes fluent and automatic. Not that conscious in shapes and patterns of letters and the sound it creates. More attention on the meaning of the words. Stage 3: Reading is an automatic process that it is used equally, or even more than live language in acquiring and developing experience. It is now used for different purposes. This is the stage that you belong. You read because you want to learn.

14 Why is it important to teach creatively?
Use of prior knowledge Remind them of what they already know before introducing a new material. Help make connections to between ideas Prior knowlegde or schema is important for the comprehension of new information. For example, reading the story of green eggs and ham. The tutees may know what an egg looks like, but not ham. With the use of prior knowledge, first by asking them if they know what eggs and ham looks like, you will know immediately if the tutee can comprehend the word he/she read. When they answer that they don’t know what a ham is, you can ask them: Nakakain na ba kayo ng maling (spam)? Parang ganun ang ham. O Ano yung bilog na nakikita niyo sa kainan tuwing pasko? Or any question that will make them remember the things that they see in a day to day basis. Some effective ways of helping kids develop comprehension is by asking them the meaning of the lyrics of the songs that they often sing. This will also give the tutees a sense of pride or empowerment that they already know the meaning of the songs, or they’ve been speaking (singing) in english for a long time already. You can also use videos, role plays or illustrations.

15 Take note! Teachers need to understand and be sympathetic whenever students get confused if they’re trying to assimilate information which contradicts their previous experience. It is important to be mindful of these because some of the tutees may have learned things differently because of their context. Perhaps, their parents or any person of authority taught them wrong ideas, or ideas different from what you explained. Tell them that there are other ways of looking at it/ understanding it and don’t argue with them.

16 Develop word recognition
- Develop love for reading through story telling - Critical thinking through post reading activities - Grammar and Oral language development through language lessons Note that unlike the western countries seen in movies, it is not in a culture for our parents to read stories for us before bed time. Therefore teaching them to read by creative story telling will make them interested in learning how to read. Ask questions after reading to practice critical thinking. These questions may range from yes/no questions, wh- questions, multiple choice, etc. Help the kids learn by practicing them to read and write words. The result of this is that the students will move to the next stage of reading, which is fluency. 

17 TIPS from our teachers!

18 “Always use references na alam nila
“Always use references na alam nila. Use pop culture or current events to cite examples or further explain the topic. Favorite ko talaga ang pagrerelate ng seemingly "unrelatable" topics to further explain the point. May extra challenge lang sa pagconceptualize ng talk points kasi hindi pwedeng pilit ang connections.” (From the experience of Smile Indias – BFA ID)

19 “Prepare activities/ visual aids
“Prepare activities/ visual aids. Example: Flash/drill cards to help them practice.” (Gyobs Baguio- AHS teacher)

20 Show something interesting to catch their attention
Show something interesting to catch their attention! Show the relation of the lesson to practical daily activities. “Wow effect!” (Geomel Jetonzo, former Science Teacher)

21 SAMPLES from our teachers!

22 Sample 1: Oops Game! Arrange the class into 6 columns. After arranging them, ask them to sit down. When you say “2”, the column 2 will stand up. Those who are standing will have to answer the question of the teacher. If one student can’t answer the question, the whole group will do a consequence. You can do variations in this activity (column 3, row 5) - This will help practice the kids to be attentive. It will also help them to prepare before class so that they know what to answer when they’re called. (Michelle Severino, former Math Teacher) Oops Game is used for follow-up of the previous lesson.

23 Sample @: Play and Relate
Maglaro na parang walang relasyon sa topic. Hal. Charade Pagkatapos ipakita ang koneksyon ng ginawang laro sa topic o leksyon. Advantage: Para masorpresa ang mga bata Unconsciously immersing the students on the topic. Smile Indias Oops Game is used for follow-up of the previous lesson.

24 SIMULATION Note: Homework (Ask the students to bring their lesson guide given last 1st sem). Instructions: 1. Group the students according to the grade level / reading they are level they are handling. 2. Ask them to identify their assigned topics. 3. After identifying their assigned topics, the groups must discuss how to teach the lesson creatively. 4. Simulate the lesson. 5. Each group will be rated/critiqued by another group. The critiquing group will also give their suggestions/tips for the presenters.

25 Gets? 1. Write 3 things that helped me learn 2. One thing the teacher can do to help me learn more 3. One thing I can do to help myself learn more Provide sheets of papers for students to write on.

26 Prayer for Generosity Amen. St. Ignatius Loyola
Lord Jesus, teach me to be generous; teach me to serve you as you deserve, to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest, to labor and not to seek reward, except that of knowing that I do your will. Amen.   St. Ignatius Loyola
