Scripture Luke 10:25 -29: And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? 26 He (Jesus) said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou? 27 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind (Deut 6:5); and thy neighbour as thyself (Mark 12:31). 28 And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live. 29 But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour? 26 2728 29 1/28/2016copyright@PLM TEACHINGS 2

Scripture: Luke 10:25-28  A certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him: Two things here to note about this lawyer’s motive:  Tempted: to prove, test, thoroughly; to put to proof God's character and power. People want to know the truth and believe  Feigned a desire to be instructed, to either confuse or to lead one to contradict oneself. You may be tested as you teach, preach, or share God’s Word to see if you are knowledgeable and believing of its contents  What is written in the law? Jesus pointed the lawyer back to the commandments of God.  Don’t try to answer always with an opinion or a doctrine, but with Scripture, rightly divided that glorifies God, and not you 1/28/2016 copyright@PLM TEACHINGS 3

What’s Going On Here?  The lawyer was tempting Jesus  “But he, willing to justify himself…” - The lawyer was trying to find a condition for how and who should he love  He was looking for a loophole in the covenant just as many Christians are looking for ways to get around of doing the commandments of God  To justify himself - Desirous to appear blameless, or to vindicate himself  He was also trying to pervert the meaning of the law through his own justification. It’s funny how people are claiming the blessings outlined in the Old Testament (i.e. the blessings of Abraham or in Deut 28), yet when you approach them about keeping the principles of the Torah, they claim that they are not under the law The lawyer sought to pervert the meaning of the law, destroys its spirituality, and bring it “down” to “his” standard, rather than attempt to frame his life by “its” requirements. 1/28/2016copyright@PLM TEACHINGS 4

As You Share the Gospel  Realize that Others Will:  Try to Add to it or Modify it to adjust to their corrupted way of thinking or make it suitable to others – Galatians 1:6-9  Corrupt the Message – 1 st Tim 4:1, 2; 2 nd Cor 2:17  Deny the Message – Romans 1:21-23; 1 st John 2:22  Cause Division – Jude 1:16-19; Romans 16: 17-18 1/28/2016copyright@PLM TEACHINGS 5

Scriptures  Galatians 1:6,7: I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; 7 which is really not another; only there are some who are disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ7  1 st Timothy 4:1,2: Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;2  2 Corinthians 2:17 - For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.  2 Corinthians 2:17 - For we are not, like so many, [like hucksters making a trade of] peddling God's Word [shortchanging and adulterating the divine message]; but like [men] of sincerity and the purest motive, as [commissioned and sent] by God, we speak [His message] in Christ (the Messiah), in the [very] sight and presence of God. (Amplified)  1 st John 2:22: Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.  Jude 1:17-19: But you, beloved, ought to remember the words that were spoken beforehand by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ, 18 that they were saying to you, "In the last time there will be mockers, following after their own ungodly lusts.“ 19 These are the ones who cause divisions, worldly-minded, devoid of the Spirit.1819 1/28/2016copyright@PLM TEACHINGS 6

How Readest Thou?  As we deal with questions, we must be skillful in responding to the Word of God (2 Tim 2:15) and careful not to handle the Word of God deceitfully (2 Corinthians 4:2)  Understandest What Thou Readeth? Many people commit themselves to reading the Bible in a year, for example, but do you understand what you are reading? 1/28/2016copyright@PLM TEACHINGS 7

I Need Someone to Guide Me Acts 8:30,31: And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? 31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him31  We, as believers are to help people by guiding them in the truth  Do you understand what you are reading? It was good for the Ethiopian to read the Bible, but unless understanding was brought to him, there was little benefit from his reading. But God had brought someone (Philip) to bring understanding.  How can I, unless someone guides me? There are those who are looking for truth and understanding. God is looking for men and women who are willing to study the Word and assist others in understanding God’s Word and principles for health, peace, and deliverance. 1/28/2016copyright@PLM TEACHINGS 8

Helpers in Christ Jesus Acts 18:26 - And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly. Romans 16:3 - Greet Priscilla and Aquila my helpers in Christ Jesus:  And expounded - Explained. We are to take time to explain and expound upon God’s Word to others  The way of God - Gave him full and ample instructions respecting the Messiah as having already come, and respecting the nature of his work.  Aquila and Priscilla did something valuable for Gods kingdom. They helped someone who had a passion for God, yet he had limited knowledge and therefore limited resources for truly effective ministry. 1/28/2016copyright@PLM TEACHINGS 9
