1 What is literary criticism? Literary criticism is the study, discussion, evaluation, and interpretation of literature. You will use scholarly literary criticism essays as your secondary sources. It is an example of what you will be writing!

2 What literary criticism is NOT a summary/overview of the story a biography of the author a comparison of the novel to modern day advances a comparison of the novel to a movie adaptation

3 Reliable Secondary Sources The easiest way to ensure that a source is “scholarly” is that it 1. be from peer-reviewed journal 2. be published by an academic press in an academic journal 3. Should quote & reference other sources (bibliography)

4 Other common characteristics of scholarly, peer-reviewed articles: Formal in format Sources are cited with footnotes or a bibliography at the end of the article Authors are scholars and researchers in the field and are identified as such Purpose of the article is to publish the results of research

5 Unreliable sources Overviews Gives “plot” Biographies Work review Wikipedia Spark notes, Cliff Notes, etc. A random essay found on Google.com

6 Where to research? Electronic articles/sources MUST come from one of Kingwood High School’s databases Printed academic journal Multivolume critical anthologies Literary criticism included in the publication of your novel.
