Ion Formation 1
2
Proton p + +1 Electron e- -1 Neutron n 0 0 Neutrons are not contributors to charge Exception: nuclear decay Neutral atom has same number of p+ and e- 2
3
If electrons and protons do not match, what will be a property of the atom? How does this occur? Lithium z=3 has how many valence electrons? What of Beryllium? Boron? Carbon? Nitrogen? Oxygen? Fluorine? Helium? 3
4
Lithium will lose the ONE valence electron to another atom due to its electronegativity. Will have 3 protons, 2 electrons and total charge will be ? +1 or written as Li+ 4
5
WHY? Octet Rule? Eight electrons in outer most levels either fill or empty levels. Easier in nature to lose one in lithium than to find 7 more. Atoms see the most stable outer level 5
6
ANION CATION Give examples of each. What electrons are lost is charge difference in the + What electrons are gained is charge difference in the - 6
7
Ion charts on wires You have one or more on history assignment Interpret ions and with what other ions they may exchange electrons. 7
