The Presentation Review of the problem Last quarter’s design Major design changes and justification Tasks for online study Survey questions Study results Future design changes

The Problem The dearth of effective, informative, location-aware cell based social coordination. CLUSTER extends existing social network and calendar applications to incorporate location awareness in a clean, efficient, cell phone based application. Influences – Facebook, Loopt, Dodgeball Issues – Privacy, cell phone interface, keeping the user aware of his or her state.

Design Changes Goal: To change the way the user deals with his or her own location.  More dynamic functionality.  More intuitive interface and cues for current state. Justification:  Repeatedly mentioned in last quarter’s heuristic evaluation project.  Higher breadth of functionality is more in line with the products offered by our competitors.  Maintaining dynamic location in the old system was a burden for the user.

The Home Screen

Location Handling

Other Changes Social networking functionality is now concentrated in one location. Replaced with Feed. Local search is gone.  Too difficult for beta, will be included in later versions.

Task One Easy: Find out if your friend Sierra is nearby (to expose social-networking/map functionality)

The Survey Use the CLUSTER prototype to find Sierra’s Location. Did you find this distance? [yes/no] How far away is she? How difficult was this task? [easy/med/hard] Is there anything you liked or didn’t like about finding if a friend is nearby?

The Survey - Continued What color is the indicator at the bottom of the home screen? [red/yellow/green] Who can see your location right now? [no one/some contacts/all contacts] How hard was it to accomplish this task? [easy/med/hard] Is there anything you liked or didn’t like about hiding from someone?

The Survey - Continued Use the CLUSTER prototype to invite your family and friends out to dinner tonight. After the task – what position in “upcoming events” was the task at? [1/2/3/4/5] Rate the amount of time it took you to finish the task. [good/a little too long/a lot too long] How hard was it to accomplish? [easy/med/hard] Is there anything you liked or didn’t like about event invitations?

Survey - Continued Do you have any other feedback regarding any particular aspect or the demo in general? Thanks!

Results – Find Sierra ½ thought.2, ½ thought.37  Prototype Error ½ thought easy, ½ thought medium Feedback  Prototype is wrong  Wants map button from home screen  Directions to the friend would be nice  Automatic notification of a nearby friend would  Not intuitive where to click on “feeds” page

Results – Hide from your Mom 7/8 thought they were visible to all, 1/8 thought he was visible to no one. 6/8 thought easy, 1/8 medium, 1/8 hard. Feedback  Task is misleading (prototype error)  Per person location hiding would be cool  Functionality other than “turn off tracking” is hidden.

Results – Invite friends/fam to Dinner 8/8 completed task successfully 8/8 thought it was easy, and the right amount of work. Feedback  “Add event” on event creation is poor wording.  Intuitive, good interface.  Liked option to invite whole groups and also by radius  Icons to indicate person vs. group would be nice  Don’t know who exactly is nearby when inviting.

General Feedback Works Great Survey was a bit too scripted. Map option from the main page needed. Home screen has no indication that you can change things. Tasks were hard to follow. Logical Sweet!

Future Changes to Design More intuitive integration of social networking. More flexibility in permissions. Reintegrating Maps to the home page Further discussion is necessary.
