From these production images, how do they directors want the audience to the character of the Inspector? Choose three words to describe him in each.

Read Act 3 up to page 56

The BIG issue The great mystery of An Inspector Calls is not who is responsible for Eva Smith’s death, but… Work with your partner to predict the ending to this statement

The BIG issue The great mystery of An Inspector Calls is not who is responsible for Eva Smith’s death, but…who is the Inspector and what is his role?

So how does Priestley use the Inspector in the play? Let’s have a closer look at his final speech to help us answer this question more closely. Working individually by using your excellent skills of analysis, what 3 things have you found interesting about the Inspector’s use of language in this speech and what impact does it have? You have 5 minutes. Some ideas to think about could be: Use of pronouns Use of repetition Word choice Rhythm of the speech (how it would be delivered) Pair share Form groups of four and swap ideas with face partner.

Some ideas you might have mentioned…. Listing things in threes to make it memorable and persuasive Use of contrasting pairs (‘We don’t live alone. We are members of one body.’) Uses second person pronouns – we and us to make the audiemnce identify with what is being said. Talks negatively about ‘they’ – people who have opinions like Mr Birling to make audience want to behave differently Use of first person pronoun ‘I’ to make audience feel that the speaker is sincere (is this ‘I’ the inspector or is this Priestley’s voice coming through?) The rhythm of the speech and where pauses are can make some phrases more forceful and memorable. It’s a speech rather than a conversation.

There are 4 statements about Inspector Goole, use them one person should read the statement and the rest should listen and then respond about how convincing they find the statement, how much they agree with it and what evidence supports or refutes it. The great mystery of An Inspector Calls is not who is responsible for Eva Smith’s death, but who is the Inspector and what is his role?

So the basis of his different roles, who exactly is the Inspector? He’s God He’s the voice of conscience He’s the child Eva Smith was pregnant with He’s a dream He’s Priestley He’s a time traveller He’s a real police Inspector Working with your partner, place these statements ON THE LINE Remember to justify your ideas.
