16 Important Deaths Benito Mussolini Italy lost its war in 1942; Mussolini's power collapsed months later. He was forced to resign summer 1943. He was finally executed by a firing squad on April 28, 1945. Pres. F. 18 Decision to drop the Bomb Wanting a swift end to the war and hearing the success of the Manhattan Project, Truman made the decision to drop the atomic bomb. August 6, 1945, a plane called the Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Instantly, 80,000 Japanese citizens were vaporized. Later an additional 100,000 perished from burns and radiation sickness. August 9, a second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, 40,000 Japanese people perished.
