1 Theme and Tone Alex Kopenhaver, Amy Sikhammountry, Thomas Fontaine

2 Definitions & Classifications Tone - the "voice" of the writing that creates a certain attitude towards the subject matter conveyed by fluctuations in syntax, point of view, selection of details, and diction. (Narrative) Theme - the general moral or message that is developed throughout the story and ends up symbolizing a life lesson. (Rhetorical)

3 Examples for Tone "Goddamn money. It always ends up making you blue as hell." (Catcher in the Rye) the tone is anger because of the colorful diction and the short phrases. "The course of true love never did run smooth." (A Midsummer Night Dream) the tone is sorrow as shown by the short sentence and the deep diction that was used.

4 Examples of Theme George went on,"With us it ain’t like that. We got a future. We got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us. We don’t have to sit in no bar room blowin’ in our jack jus’ because we got no place else to go. If them other guys gets in jail they can rot for all anybody gives a damn. But not us." Lennie broke in. "But not us! An’ why? Because… because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that’s why." He laughed delightedly. "Go on now, George!" The example above shows that the theme is friendship.
