Year 2 SATS 14.1.16 -- INFORMATION SESSION

General Information Although this is a new assessment, the format is the same as previous years. Year 2 SATs are different to year 6 SATs. Week beginning May 16 th. Each year 2 class will be doing the same assessments at the same time. Whole class sessions will take place in the morning. Afternoons will include Art, DT, PE, Outdoor Games. You will receive your child’s SATs scores in their end of year report. End of year scores will be a combination of SATs scores and teacher assessment. We refer to SATs as important independent work rather than a test. Children MUST be in school and on time.

General Information We have adapted the curriculum this year to prepare the children for the new assessments. To consolidate this learning the following things can be done at home to help prepare them: o Reading with your child and asking them comprehension questions. o Discussing types of words (adjectives, adverbs etc) *see SATs study and practise books* o Mental maths (number bonds) o Times table practise. o Solving calculations in real life situations. You can access the practise papers by following these links: English: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/2016-key-stage-1-english-reading-sample-test-materials-mark- scheme-and-test-administration-instructionshttps://www.gov.uk/government/publications/2016-key-stage-1-english-reading-sample-test-materials-mark- scheme-and-test-administration-instructions SPAG: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/2016-key-stage-1-english-grammar-punctuation-and-spelling- sample-test-materials-mark-scheme-and-test-administration-instructionshttps://www.gov.uk/government/publications/2016-key-stage-1-english-grammar-punctuation-and-spelling- sample-test-materials-mark-scheme-and-test-administration-instructions Maths: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/2016-key-stage-1-mathematics-sample-test-materials-mark- schemes-and-test-administration-instructionshttps://www.gov.uk/government/publications/2016-key-stage-1-mathematics-sample-test-materials-mark- schemes-and-test-administration-instructions *Please do not share these with your children until after we have completed the practise tests next week.

Year 2 SATS Top Tips We will conduct practise SATs next week so that the children get used to the test conditions. So that the children don’t develop negative attitudes towards these tests please act normal. If you seem stressed, they will be stressed. Everything will be done in school to ensure the children are not stressed about the SATs. A lot of children actually enjoy doing SATs! This PowerPoint will be available on the school website.

How results are reported The old levelling system has now been replaced nationally. The result that parents will receive with their child’s end of year report will now state whether they are working at below age related expectations, at age related expectations or above age related expectations in reading, writing and maths. The class teacher’s assessment of the children’s work from across the year can also be used as evidence to support whether a child is below, at, or above age related expectations. Homework can also be taken into account, but the homework must be a true representation of the child's work, not the parents.

Books to help There are books that can be ordered tonight which can be used at home to prepare the children for the tests. These are: Maths SATs study and practise book Reading SATs study and practise book Spelling, punctuation and grammar SATs study and practice book We can order these at just £2 each. We do not make any profit on these. General retail price is £4.95 per book.
