2 Summary Organic chemistry is the study of carbon compounds Carbon- –differentiates living from nonliving matter –shares its four valence electrons –bonds to form organic molecules’ skeletons. –Hydrocarbons form when hydrogen bonds with the skeleton. Isomers- –Structural isomers differ in their double covalent bonds’ location –Geometric isomers have different spatial arrangements –Enantiomers mirror each other

5 Clarification Vitalism- –life cannot be created with science Isomers- –Aka “congruent “, basically they’re “similar” Structural Isomers- –Same compounds, different shapes. Geometrical Isomers- –Similar shape, different arrangements. Enantiomers- –Two compounds copying one another, but flipped

6 Questions Define organic Chemistry. Evaluate the role of hydrocarbons in lipids. Why is carbon referred to as the backbone of biological molecules? What are the three types of isomers? Explain the significance. How is Carbon so versatile?

7 Prediction In Chapter 4, compounds that contain carbon are organic. In Chapter 8, we'll be learning about the carbon cycle. We learned about organisms as sources of valued substance. We will learn about organism's schedule of reproduction and survival in Chapter 52.
