2 Do Now According to the excerpt, what were Jefferson’s goals in regards to Native Americans? “The acquisition of Louisiana will, it is hoped, put in our power the means of inducing all the Indians on this side [of the Mississippi River] to transplant themselves to the other side.” Jefferson wanted to remove all tribes who refused to cooperate in “civilizing” themselves

3 James Madison 4 th President 2 Terms: 1809-1817 “Father of the Constitution” Wrote Federalist Papers and Bill of Rights Broke away from Federalists to form the Democratic-Republican Party with Jefferson

4 Macon’s Bill No. 2 1810- After James Madison’s easy presidential victory he adopted a new policy: Allowed trade to resume Embargo would resume if Britain or France ceased to recognize American rights Britain continued to attack American vessels, impress American sailors  1812: Embargo reimposed with Britain!
