1 Do Now 1. Mr. Murray was forcing it, when he took my phone this morning

2 What is it Subordinate Clause - A clause or phrase that contains a noun and a verb but cannot stand alone as a sentence. Ex. When the bell rings, it is time to go

3 Punctuating Subordinate Clause - When a subordinate clause is at the beginning of a sentence, it is marked with a comma -ex. While I’m at school, I learn about grammar.

4 Punctuating Subordinate Clauses - When a subordinate clause is at the end of a sentence it is not marked by a comma. - Ex. I learn about grammar while I am at school

5 Moving Subordinate Clauses Subordinate clauses can be moved from the front of the sentence to the back of a sentence and vise versa. ◦- Why? To add variety to our sentence structures.

6 Example I am going to get a job once school is over. Vs. Once school is over, I am going to get a job.

7 Review Are the following sentences punctuated correctly? 1. Since 2008 NBA prospects have been required to attend at least one year of college before entering the NBA draft. 2. Mr. Murray gets angry, when the Packers lose. 3 When the school year is over, I’m going to get a job.

8 Assignment - Begin the first stage of the writing process by planning a persuasive letter to a teacher or administrator at your school protesting one or more school rules you do not agree with. - Once you have finished planning your letter, you may begin drafting it.

9 Exit Ticket Write two sentence that includes the same subordinate clause. For the first sentence, include the clause at the beginning of the sentence, and for the second sentence include the clause at the end of the sentence.

12 What’s an Appositive? An appositive is a noun or noun phrase that renames another noun right beside it.

13 Here is an example Mr. Murray, my English teacher, reminds me a lot of Jay-Z. - The phrase sectioned off by commas is the appositive.
