Activating Strategy: Write a paragraph about a city of your choice using ONE of the points of view below: 1. How you normally experience a city (sights, sounds, etc.) 2. Pretend you are a bug. What would you see, smell, hear, notice? 3. Pretend you are a bird. What would the city seem like from up in the air?

Types of Narrators

What is a Narrator? “One who tells, or is assumed to be telling, the story in a given narrative (Baldick 220). May have personality or simply be a “voice.” The narrator is not the author.

First Person Narrator A character in the story who describes the experience Uses personal pronouns (I, me) Limits reader’s knowledge to what the narrator perceives, knows, and describes; may not be reliable

Second-Person Narrator Reader becomes the central character of the story Narrator specifically speaks to the reader Uses pronoun you Does not appear frequently in literature

Third-Person Limited Narrator Outsider looking in; focuses on the experience of only one character Tells the story using third-person pronouns (He, she, they)

Third-Person Omniscient Narrator “All-knowing” Does not participate in the story’s action, but knows everything about everyone. Uses third person pronouns (He, she, they).

Third-Person Objective Does not focus on a particular character Does not give any insight into how characters think or feel Narrator is detached from the story/action (like a roving movie camera) Uses third-person pronouns (he, she, they)
