HAIR LOSS EVALUATION EFFICIENCY STUDY Peter Claise & Barbara Visher Vanderbilt University Department of Biomedical Engineering Advisors: Dr. Lloyd King Dr. Jennifer Dempsey Dr. Sara Whitehead

My Head is FREEZING!! Male Pattern Baldness –50 mill men in US –40% post menopausal woman Alopecia Areata –~equal in males and females –1.7% of the population –4 Million in the U.S.A. –Childhood –Psychologically devastating Alopecia Totalis/Universalis –800,000 in US –childhood/atopic individuals

Problem Although hair loss is a significant problem, research efforts in the US have been sporadic and incoherent due to lack of clinical communication and a centralized information system for collected data. Therefore, efforts for learning more about and stopping hair loss are slow and tedious.

Mission Statement To assist in the overview, containment and efficiency of a useful hair loss study by creating a database with a wide variety of fields that are easily sortable for a large number of records in order to allow researchers the ability of developing genotypic correlations regarding hair loss.

GOALS Compile several research projects Expand on prior attempts Increase time efficiency Increase quality of visit Regarding Database –Accessible –Aesthetically pleasing –Easily Manipulated –Organize, store and compile –Assess genotypic correlations

WORK TO DATE Background research - hair loss Assessment of customer needs Familiarized with VA computer network Developing programming skills using Microsoft Access Implementing client questionnaire into database framework

WORK PROGRESSION Open ended questionnaire Yes/No questionnaire (binary) Combo questionnaire General form -> Specific Form Combo questionnaire

CURRENT WORK Final database template for advisor approval Debug Aesthetically pleasing platform Web access –http://vubme.vuse.vanderbilt.edu/srdesign/2002/group20/

MEDICAL FORM PROTOTYPE FIELDS Medical History Photographs –Nails –Scalp Histological Staging Patient Info –DOB –Gender –SS#

SAMPLING Known genetic linkage Known autoimmune disease linkage –lupus, MS, diabetes, rheum. Arthritis Query by weight, diabetes and family diabetes Use DB to validate larger scheme

A MINUTE SAVED = A PENNY SAVED Total time spent: 95 min Total time spent: 55 min

BENEFITS TO THE USER Time efficient Secure Organized Guarantees completion of Patient file Easy to Query or Sort Track individual patient changes

FUTURE GOALS Increase # of patients seen weekly –3 vs 8 HIPPA constraints addressed Generate wider geographic patient population FIND A RELIABLE METHOD OF TREATMENT
