1 Buoyancy p

2 When an object is placed in water, it displaces, or moves, water out of the way. Think of the last time you took a bath!

5 Do you displace water when you swim in the ocean
Do you displace water when you swim in the ocean? Does the water level rise when you enter?

6 1. What is a force? A push or a pull

7 2. Why do objects feel lighter in water?
Because of buoyancy!

8 3. What is buoyancy? A force that acts in the upward direction, against the force of gravity, so it makes an object feel lighter when placed in a fluid. Weight Buoyant force

9 4. What direction does the buoyant force act?
Upward! (opposite of gravity)

10 5. How can you tell how strong the buoyant force is?
By using Archimedes's principle

11 6. What is Archimedes Principle?
The buoyant force on an object is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by the object. Eureka!

17 7. Why do steel ships float?
By changing the shape, you can change the volume! Weight of ship = Weight of displaced water

20 Buoyant force equals weight of displaced water!

31 Buoyancy Quiz

32 1. If you dive into a pool, ocean, or lake there is a force that pushes your body upward. Everything that floats has this upward force pushing and pushing it. What is the name of this upward pushing force?

33 2. Draw a sketch that illustrates this upward
force in the example in question one.

34 3. If Olympic swimmer Amanda Beard displaces 130 lbs of water when she is swimming, how many pounds (lbs) of buoyant force would be pushing her up?

35 4. If Amanda weighs 120lbs will the buoyant force be enough to make her float or will she need to swim to keep afloat?
