2 I HEART this image of the Periodic Table.
It is a great way to look at each elements because there are pictures that represent real life examples of how they are used! Actual image is on the next slide.

4 Families on the Periodic Table
Elements on the periodic table can be grouped into families/groups based on their chemical properties (AND valence electrons). Each family/group has a specific name based on reactivity to different elements. H has no family members (). Hydrogen is is a non-metal.

5 Used for photography, medicines, insecticides
YOUR FLASH CARDS Example for ADVANCED 35 Bromine Group/Family Halogen NON-Metal Used for photography, medicines, insecticides Br From back of your sheet SLT Period 2

6 ALKALI METALS Group 1 1 electron in the outer shell (valence)
Soft and silvery metals Very reactive, especially with water Conducts electricity Image:

7 ALKALINE EARTH METALS Group 2
2 electrons in the outer shell (Valence electrons) White and malleable Reactive, but less than Alkali metals Conducts electricity

8 TRANSITION METALS Groups in the middle
Good conductors of heat and electricity. Some are used for jewelry (malleable) The transition metals are able to put up to 32 electrons in their second to last shell. Can bond with many elements in a variety of shapes.

9 BORON FAMILY Group 3 3 electrons in the outer shell (Valence electrons) Most are metals Boron itself though is a metalloid (which means it has metal like properties)

10 CARBON FAMILY Group 4 4 electrons in the outer shell
Contains metals, metalloids, and a non-metal Carbon (C) *Make sure you check the large Periodic table to see if the element you are looking for is a metal, non-metal, gas or metalloid

11 NITROGEN FAMILY Group 5 5 electrons in the outer shell
Can share electrons to form compounds Contains metals, metalloids, and non-metals *Make sure you check the large Periodic table to see if the element you are looking for is a metal, non-metal, gas or metalloid

12 OXYGEN FAMILY Group 6 6 electrons in the outer shell
Contains metals, metalloids, and non-metals Reactive *Make sure you check the large Periodic table to see if the element you are looking for is a metal, non-metal, gas or metalloid

13 Halogens Group 7 7 electrons in the outer shell All are non-metals
Very reactive are often bonded with elements from Group 1

14 Noble Gases Group 8 Exist as gases Non-metals
8 electrons in the outer shell = Full Helium (He) has only 2 electrons in the outer shell = Full Not reactive with other elements

15 Rare Earth Metals Some are Radioactive
The rare earths are silver, silvery-white, or gray metals. Conduct electricity
