ENJOY ENGLISH-10 (BIBOLETOVA M.Z.) (Unit-3.)‏ ''MANMADE WONDERS OF THE WORLD''

Circum-Baikal Railway Is One Of The Man-made Wonders Of The World. It runs from Slyudyanka-2 to the Baikal settlement. The length is 89 kms. There are 4 stations and one passing track there. It is a one track road.

The first exploration of a possible route from Irkutsk to lake Baikal was carried out in 1894. The construction of the railway from Irkutsk to Cape Baranchik ( port Baikal) on the lake was conducted from 1896 to 1900, costing of 3,47 million roubles. For the first time a train to a shore of the Baikal came on October 21, 1898 after laying of railway from Irkutsk up to station Baikal. This railway became the western part of Circum-Baikal railway.

The construction of the most complex section from Slyudyanka to the Baikal station began only in the spring of 1902 with the aim of finishing it by 1905.

The Railroad In Winter

Port Baikal.The Railway Station.

In the present day the Circum- Baikal railway is the branch covering the route Slyudyanka- 2-Kultuk-Maritui-Baikal.It contains 38 tunnels, 15 stone galleries, 3 ferro- concrete galleries, 248 bridges and viaducts and 268 retaining walls. This road is unique because of the richness of engineering constructions. There are no analogies to this road in the world.

''The golden buckle on the steel belt of Russia.'' ''A historical railway in the Irkutsk region of Russia.'' ''A unique achievement in engineering.''

A museum of engineering constructions

The project was made by Tyumensteva Olga, Pulyaevsky Mikhail, Zangeeva Nadezhda, Yanin Sergey.(School 56 Babushkin)‏ ‏
