1 MATTHEW Chapter 6:1-6 THAT THEY MAY BE SEEN OF MEN I.Introduction A.Jesus still contrasting the Law with His grace!

2 1.Righteousness MUST exceed that of the Scribes. 2.We cannot do it on our own. a)Message He is communicating. b)The Lord concerned with the heart. (1)Performance can be faked.

3 3. Firing at the “religious caste”. a)6 areas of faked, outward religion! (1) Giving to the poor, prayer, fasting, money, and planning for the future! (2) Important to us on how to do it correctly.

4 II.Matthew 6:1 A.The “heart” of the matter! 1.Done anything with hope of being noticed? a)We all have. (1) A work of the flesh.

5 (a) The heart makes the difference. III.Matthew 6:2-4 A.James 1:27 1.Christians started the hospitals, orphanages!

6 a)Jesus came to heal the broken hearted! (1)Christians to be “others” focused. 2.The heart of the Pharisee to be noticed. a)With the right heart = spiritual reward! b) If not, the act will be the reward.

7 (1)Pharisees would blow a trumpet. (2)The poor would come running. (a) Good way to call those in need. (b) But Jesus knew the heart. (c) Opportunity to be seen of men.

8 3.This kind of giving goes on even today! a)People hand me their tithe envelope. b)We provide opportunity. c)Some give as as “donors” –once- in-a-while.

9 d)Some if the need is great enough. e)Some organizations appeal to the flesh. (1)Some agree to put their name in bricks. (2)Churches do the same thing.

10 (a)Our playground will have no plaques! (i)Wanted people to be impressed with his Lord! (a) That kind of giving the Lord blesses! (b) That kind of the Lord wants.

11 a)Shouldn’t have to be asked! IV.Matthew 6:5-6 A.Approaching the “Lord’s Prayer”. 1.Contrasting the “fake” with the real.

12 B.Hypocrite = “an actor”. 1.Prayer can be a 3- ring-circus! a)Turned prayer into public exhibition. b)Ever prayed for those who hear the prayer?

13 c)Ever prayed “at” someone? d)Ever attended a prayer meeting? (1) Most likely – YES. (a)Jesus wants more than that. (b)Jesus deserves more.

14 (i)Doesn’t want us to “fake it”. (ii)Doesn’t want us to “wear the mask”. (iii)Wants them to be genuine. (a)He wants them to pray. V.CONCLUSION

15 A.An issue with our heart! 1. “Play-acting” will not change that heart. 2.They will not reach their highest potential! a)The reward will be short! (1)The answer?
