5 The goal of phonics is to enable readers to decode new written words by sounding them out, or in phonics terms, blending the sound-spelling patterns. Children are taught to read by breaking down words into separate sounds called ‘phonemes’. They decode the sounds then blend them back together to form the word. Th i s i s m y h ou s e.

6 We encourage the children to use actions when segmenting and blending new words together. This helps them to identify the sounds within the words more easily. You may have heard the children using these terms at home when you are reading together. A Phoneme – a single clap. A digraph- two bent finger. A trigraph- three bent fingers. A split vowel digraph- a jumping finger.
