OpenWetWare: Share your science Erik Dassi Centre for Integrative Biology University of Trento Mattarello 21.12.2009

What is OpenWetWare? effort to promote the sharing of information among researchers and groups working in biology & biological engineering Groups & Labs From around the world Courses Host your classes Protocols In vivo, in vitro, in silico

How do I join OWW ? Joining OWW is required for editing pages – reading is open to everyone Join at http://openwetware.org/wiki/Joinhttp://openwetware.org/wiki/Join Only basic informations are required Why would you like to join OWW ? Once registered, edit your personal page …it’s your presentation to the OWW world, a sort of online CV …and avoids you artistic interpretations !

The CIBIO LTG pages Accessible at http://openwetware.org/wiki/Quattronehttp://openwetware.org/wiki/Quattrone

So,how does it work? The OWW site supports a collaborative editing model: remember Wikipedia ? Based on the MediaWiki software, as Wikipedia itself All the content is structured in pages You can create your own pages (e.g. course notebook), edit existing ones (e.g. add a seminar), or even delete a page. BUT REMEMBER: all changes that you make are logged, so if you (un)intentionally damage someone else’s pages, OWW knows you did it!

How do I add or edit a page? Content is added in almost the same way as you do in Word: you write in a simplified text editor (bold, italic, links, and little more) can look at existing pages to learn how to do something To edit a page: navigate to the page press the edit button on top of it do the actual editing and then press save page… you’re done! To create a new page: just type its name into the address box: you will be asked to edit the new page must give the page a meaningful name and correct prefix add {{Quattrone}} as first line of every new page

How do I upload a file ? You can upload documents, images, slides: Go to http://www.openwetware.org/wiki/Special:Upload (or click Upload link in lower left part of OWW page)http://www.openwetware.org/wiki/Special:Upload select the file you want to upload (source filename) choose a meaningful destination name and make it unique by prefixing it with the string Quattrone_ Click on Upload file… you’re done! Now you can refer and link to this file by its name

How do I add a seminar ? Upload the seminar material: first of all, upload all your files (slides, papers, ecc) as described before Edit the talks page: edit http://openwetware.org/wiki/Quattrone:Talkshttp://openwetware.org/wiki/Quattrone:Talks copy the code of a previous seminar and then edit it according to your needs in just 5 minutes, you’re done… and the content is available to everybody!

Policy for posting papers A paper file can be posted on OWW pages IF and ONLY IF: You own the copyright on it, or It is an Open Access paper (e.g. PLoS papers) What if no one of this conditions hold ? You can still post the paper DOI, so everybody can download it

A couple of words on copyright What does this means ? Free to share and remix BUT : Attribution Share alike All content you add to OWW is published under this licence: Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 2.5 Generic

Conclusion OWW allows to: Share scientific informations in a painless way Collaborate between groups, even from different locations Involve students in collaborative content editing by means of course notebooks Open science will be an advantage for everybody, as open source software already is!

Thank you Questions ? For any problem/doubt, come at the 2° floor
