1 PSY.Encoding

2 HW DUE: IQ and EQ reflection

3 The Willpower Instinct
Group read pg. 23 – 27 Make a list of things that surprise you. Define meditation

4 The Willpower Instinct
Independently read pg. 41 – 45 Explain one theory of memory retrieval. Before answering – do 15 jumping jacks.

5 Intelligence vs. Memory
Turn and Talk: Are memory and intelligence the same thing?

6 Human Memory Memory: our ability to encode, store, retain and recall information and past experiences in the human brain.

7 Demonstration: The Penny Test
Draw a penny…

8 Components of Memory ENCODING STORAGE RETRIEVAL
Getting information into memory STORAGE Maintaining encoded information in memory RETRIEVAL Pulling information from your memory

9 Encoding Encoding: How a memory is created
Some information (route to your school) is automatically processed. Space, time, and frequency However novel information (an address) requires attention and effort. Rehearsal and repetition

10 Effortful Processing Rehearsal boosts memory… to a point
The spacing effect “Spreading out” information is better than encoding quickly and all at once (cramming) Maintenance Rehearsal (simple repetition)… not effective Elaborative Rehearsal: Connect to existing knowledge

11 Effortful Processing - Chunking
Chunking – grouping together of familiar and meaningful information Time chunking and studying Phone numbers and SS# First List of 15 words Clock Horse Color Baby Sword Plugs Lamp Orange Table Sway Army Bank Fire Hold Worm Table Hold Find Cow Rock Next 15 that can be chunked Cow Cat Dog Fish Bird Orange Yellow Blue Green Black Teacher School Student Homework Class Apple Banana Kiwi Grape Mango

12 Chunking Demonstration
First List of 15 words Clock Horse Color Baby Sword Plugs Lamp Orange Table Sway Army Bank Fire Hold Worm Table Hold Find Cow Rock Next 15 that can be chunked Cow Cat Dog Fish Bird Orange Yellow Blue Green Black Teacher School Student Homework Class Apple Banana Kiwi Grape Mango

13 Effortful Processing – Mnemonic Devices
Mnemonic Device: a sentence or word that helps us memorize a string of words or ideas. Acronyms (ROY G BIV) Acrostics – (Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally) Method of Loci (Associating items with places) Pegword – “one is a bun, two is a shoe, three is a tree, four is a door, five is a hive, six is sticks, seven is heaven, eight is a gate, nine is a line, and ten is a hen.”

14 Using Mnemonic Devices
Use a mnemonic device to remember each of the following: The first 8 presidents: Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Adams, Jackson, VanBuren) A grocery list of 10 items: milk, eggs, ice cream, lettuce, apples, Goldfish, graham crackers, Diet Coke, chicken, rice

15 MEMORY JOURNAL ENTRIES
Date of entry Topic presented in class that may help you improve your memory Brief description of this psychological factor (To be conducted on your own using internet research) Identify and provide a brief summary of one psychological study that researched this topic in memory Explanation of specifically how you plan on using this knowledge to improve your memory in school, work, extracurricular, or everyday life. Please note this section must be specific. Discuss a specific class that you will use these strategies. Do not speak in generalities. You may be asked to write about multiple topics in each entry. I will be checking these journal entries throughout the unit. You will be graded for this assignment, and it will total 30 points (10 points per entry). Grades will be allocated based on the level of thought given to each entry, your understanding of each topic, and the impressiveness of your “memory improving strategy” for each topic that you come up with.
