4 Scottish Seaweed Aquaculture:
The early research RedWeed project to grow dulse in combination with Salmon as abalone diet (2003) Showed potential of seaweed aquaculture in Scotland, and benefits of integrated approach Number of projects exploring seaweed production as a biofuel and in an IMTA context BioMara (2009) €6 million seaweed to biofuels

5 Bench without tanks: side bars with 4x suspended LED lighting strips
61cm 274cm 35cm 2 tables each with 4 tanks Seawater supply pipe 6 reels per tank, each 60m of 2mm twine. Effective: 50m longline reel-1

7 Cutter’s Rock Kerrera Cultivating since 2012- AT~Sea project
FP7 testing different textiles for seaweed group 2 sets of longlines based on mussel system

8 Key Questions Key environmental factors influencing yield and biochemical composition. Site selection. Develop life cycle assessment Carbon balance Sustainability information suitable for aquatic and marine systems. Identify the role of algae in carbon and nutrient cycling (still not clear with wild material). Understand to what extent algal cultivation affects biodiversity in the farm, the water column and benthic environment.

9 Current Projects SeaGas- IB Catalyst grant (July 2015- June 2018)
Macrofuels- Horizons 2020 (January December 2019) Pepper Dulse- IBioIC/HIE funded studentship Biofeed- Norway (EIA of both wild and cultivated seaweeds) MISTRA- Sweden (August July 20180
