4 WIDA Can Do Descriptors – Formative or Summative Framework – The ‘Can Do Descriptors’ can help you understand what your EL will be able to do without scaffolding – You are trying to move them into the next level

7 Learn About Your EL Student Groupings – For those of you who were invited I have written down on a Name Chart where your students are based off their language scores – If you have more than one student go with the one you think is struggling the most in your class – If you do not have an ELL choose a group to join – Group up with the teachers who you share a student with – Introduce yourself to one another – Look at their levels and discuss the following questions: – What has your student been struggling with? – Looking at the social and instructional language framework: How do you think as a team of teachers you could meet this specific student’s needs?

8 What are some ideas you came up with for your student? – Tell us the level of your student – Give an idea of what could be done to help that student

11 Reaching ELs in the Content Area – Write down the name of your student and their levels on your sticky note – Now you will break up into your content areas – For elective courses think about what core content is most relevant in your course and work with them – As a group look at the English Language Proficiency Standards – Choose a topic you specifically teach analyze where your student is at – Collaborate with your content team to determine what you could to scaffold and differentiate for your student to reach the next level of understanding
