4 Brief History of World Music Studies:  1890 ’ s – comparative musicology begins in Germany with E. Hornbostel and C. Sachs  1920 ’ s – Ethno-musicology leading figure Dutch scholar J. Kunst  1950 ’ s – United States, Europe and Australia establish university programs to study non-western musical cultures  1980 ’ s – ethnomusicology becomes the study of “ Music Wherever, Whenever ” to include western popular genres such as pop, rock, Jazz and rap.  1890 ’ s – comparative musicology begins in Germany with E.
