Singing With Grace In Your Hearts Unto God What the New Testament Teaches About Singing in Worship to God

Singing Basics Singing can be individual (Acts 16:25; Jas. 5:13), or congregational (1 Cor. 14:15,26; Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16) Singing, involving the whole congregation, was done by everyone – “one another,” not a soloist or a choir (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16) Singing (vocal music) was done acappella only, unaccompanied by instruments (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16)

Singing Basics Singing is an act of worship to God (Acts 16:25; Rom. 15:9; Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16; Heb. 2:12; 13:15; Jas. 5:13; Rev. 5:9; 14:3; 15:3) Singing teaches and encourages both ourselves and others (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16) – What about members who don’t sing? They disobey the command to sing! Singing is to be heart-felt, not mechanical or routine (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16)

Singing Basics Singing focuses on spiritual thoughts (psalms, hymns, spiritual songs, praise), not secular thoughts (Mt. 26:30; Mk. 14:26; Acts 16:25; Eph. 5:18-19; Col. 3:16; Jas. 5:13) Singing was done when times were good (Jas. 5:13), and when times were bad (Acts 16:25)

Singing in Review Singing exemplifies the unity of the church (Rom. 15:6) Singing is a form of teaching (Col. 3:16) Singing expresses the words of the H.S. and Christ dwelling in us (Eph. 5:18-19; Col. 3:16) Singing involves the whole person (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16; Heb. 13:15)

Singing in Review Singing is for mutual edification (Eph. 5:19) Singing is a form of praise worship unto God (Col. 3:16) Singing is a confession of faith (Heb. 13:15) Singing is a sacrifice (Heb. 13:15) Singing expresses deep emotion (Jas. 5:13)

How Can We Improve Our Singing? Sing … sing out, so others can hear and be taught and admonished [ Parents, encourage your child at an early age to sing ] Sing from the heart sincerely and with thanksgiving, not from ritual or routine Sing words that you understand (remember, the words or more important than the notes)

How Can We Improve Our Singing? Sing new songs to keep one from merely “going through the motions” Sing to worship/praise God and edify (self and others), not to entertain or attract attention to self
