1 Aim: How do we construct a line graph? Do Now: 1.How many inches of rain fell during the month of June? 2.During which month did the most rain fall?

2 1. Identify the Variables & 2. Label each Axis X-axis : independent variable (manipulated variable) *Only one in a valid experiment Ex. Days Y-axis: dependent variable (measurable) Ex. Height of plant (cm)

3 3. Determine the Variable Range For each variable, subtract the lowest value from the highest value. This number is your range Determine the range for both axes

4 4. Number Each Axis (Scale) Divide the range by the number of squares on the axis Round to a number that is easy to count by such as 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 etc. Each axis must be done separately Ex. Data: 11, 13, 19, 24, 27, 33 Range: 33-11=22Squares: 12 22/12=1.8, choose to count by 2’s

5 5. Plot the Data Points If you are constructing a double line graph, make sure to plot two data sets & include a key on the graph

6 6. Draw the Line Connect the data points with a line or curve!

7 7. Title the Graph Your graph needs a descriptive title using the following format: Dependent variable vs. Independent variable Child’s Height vs. Child’s Age

8 8. Interpret the Graph Describe the relationship between the independent & the dependent variable *As the independent variable increases, the dependent variable (increases, decreases, is constant) Ex. As the child’s age increases, the child’s height increases
