23-Jan-16 CLOUD COMPUTING & IPTV BY ROBERT NATHAN

DEFINITION: “Cloud computing is a computing technology that uses the internet with centralised servers to maintain data and applications”.

3 WHY CLOUD SERVICES Capex costs for users is greatly reduced as this is converted to operational expenditure with cloud services hence the potential for revenue generation. Cloud services are generally available regardless of user device and location. Users can access data and systems via a dedicated software app or web browser. Cloud technology allows much more efficient computation by centralizing storage, memory, processing and bandwidth.

CLOUD ELEMENTS Applications Cloud application services or "Software as a Service (SaaS)" this eliminates the need to install and run the application on the customer's own computers and simplifying maintenance and support. Platform Cloud platform services or "Platform as a Service (PaaS)" It facilitates deployment of applications without the cost and complexity of buying and managing the underlying hardware and software layers. Infrastructure Cloud infrastructure services or "Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)" Eliminates the need for the users to purchasing servers, software, data center space or network equipment to run and drive business. Local Hardware As services are provided in the cloud all the heavy processing is done in the cloud, this allows user to utilize low powered computer / netbooks and thin clients to interact with the cloud services.

CLOUD SEGMENTS 3 Potential cloud Segments Residential Users can purchase everything from a phone services and internet to virtual desktop or a short or long term. This would eliminate the requirement for home users to maintain and upgrade local hardware every 2~3 years Commercial Business can purchase internet / servers / virtual desktop / phone services on short or long term basis virtually eliminating a large upfront capex, these services are offered on a monthly basis Wholesale Cloud services could be offered to other local council / departments on a white label wholesale service. 5
