2 Phonics Repeat the word after me:
Join The word join has the /oi/ sound in the middle of the word. Repeat these words after me: Joy and boy The words joy and boy end with the /oi/ sound. What sound do you hear? /oi/

3 Phonics Skill Open your book to page 94.
I will ask for volunteers to help me with some of the words. Read page 95. See if you can find the appropriate words that have the same vowel sound.

4 Phonics and Spelling Look at the top of your student sheet.
Read these words to yourself. Now let’s read them together. A. royal moist spoil B. cowboy enjoy poison C. noisy coil toy

5 Phonics and spelling Read the sentences and underline words with the /oi/ sound. Independent. Read with partners; Guppies go first! Choral Read That baby’s drum is a noisy toy! Put the milk in the refrigerator so it won’t spoil. The ground was moist after the light rain. The queen looked royal when she wore her crown. Did you enjoy the book about colors?

7 Locating Information- Now that we’ve practiced spelling words accurately, we will work on finding information accurately. Good readers understand different parts of a book. Most nonfiction books are organized so that it is easy for readers to find information. Let’s look at ways we can find information in our own Student Edition. Look at the cover. Find the title. Title – Name of … A book A unit A chapter A story

Open to pages 4 – 9. Look at the Table of Contents. Table of contents - A list of selection titles with the page numbers. Turn to page 100 and view the heading “Music is Sound.” Heading – a title that comes before each new part of a selection. Find another heading. TTYP - Goldfish

Turn to page 486. Glossary – a dictionary of important words found in a book. Alphabetical order Guide words help us find where the definition for a word is located. Look at pages 498 and 499. Index of Titles and Authors Index – List of subjects Alphabetical order Page numbers Usually in the back of the book

11 What are the guide words on the page where you can find the word crop?
Committee and crumpled Look at the Index of Titles and Authors. On what pages can a story by Cynthia Rylant be found? Pages 22-43

12 Dictionary Practice You will work with a partner and a classroom dictionary to locate different words. Look for these words: Join Noise Toy Find the guide words that appear on the top of the pages for the words and write them on the back of your paper.

14 Read aloud You will listen to a selection called “Sounds All Around.”
It tells about the many types of sounds in the world. This story is nonfiction. Is nonfiction fake or real? CHORAL TTYP Why do you like to read nonfiction text? SYS like this, “I like to read nonfiction text ___________________.”

15 Remember we can use parts of a book to help find information.
How could I locate information for this story? If I wanted to find this selection in a book, I could look at the table of contents to find the title and the page number on which the selection begins. I could also use the index and look for the selection title or for the author’s name. Since this is nonfiction text, why do you want to read “Sounds All Around”? TTYP Let’s READ!!

17 Robust Vocabulary - attract
Hoping to attract a mate, a grouse makes a sound like a drum. Attract – If you attract someone, you make that person want to come to you. What’s the word? Attract – Say Spell Say A bird called a manakin vibrates its wings very quickly to attract a female with its sound. What type of weather might attract you to play outside, warm and sunny or cold and rainy? (CHORAL)

18 Robust Vocabulary - territory
A howler monkey uses its loud howl to protect its territory. Territory – An animal’s territory is an area of land that is sees as its home. What’s the word? Territory – Say, Spell, Say Our dog protects its territory by barking whenever someone comes to our door. Would a lion protect its territory by roaring loudly or sleeping quietly? (CHORAL)

21 Example: Whispering measures only about twenty decibels.

24 Your turn! Directions: Choose some of our number words and write your own sentences on the back of the page. Circle your word if it is an exact number, or draw a box around it if it’s a word that is not exact.
