Definition: Comparing two unlike things without using “like” or “as” Example: Simile Definition: uses the words “like” or “as” to compare one object or idea with another Example: busy as a bee

3 Hyperbole Definition: obvious and intentional exaggeration (not meant to be taken literal) overstatement Example: “wait an eternity” “I am so hungry I could eat a horse”

4 Personification Definition: giving human traits (qualities, feelings, action, or characteristics) to non-living objects (things, colors, qualities, or ideas Example: the window winked at me

5 Euphemism Definition: the substitution of an agreeable or inoffensive expression for one that may offend or be unpleasant Example: “passed away” “correctional facility” “big boned” “put to sleep”

6 Alliteration Definition: two or more stressed syllables of a sound either with the same consonant sound or sound group Example Hannah’s home has heat hopefully. Fred’s friends fried Fritos for Friday’s food

7 Allusion Definition: a brief reference to a person, event, or place, real or fake, or to a work of art. Casual reference to a famous historical or literary figure or event. An allusion may be drawn from history, geography, literature, or religion
