System Center Configuration Manager 2012 R2 Jodie Gaver Jodie Gaver Working with Configuration Manager since 2010 - Working with Configuration Manager since 2010 -MCTS: Administering and Deploying System Center 2012 Configuration Manager - Windows Server 2008 Active Directory Configuration -MCP This Presentation: -Updating OS Images with Windows Updates

Offline Service for OS Images One of the new features in ConfigMgr 2012 allows you to apply Windows Updates to an OS image that’s been imported to the ConfigMgr 2012 library. This feature only supports “Component Based Servicing” (CBS) updates, and can be applied to Windows Vista and newer. For installing other updates (Office or other Microsoft Products – use Install Updates in a Task Sequence) Why? It’s easy & beats waiting..rebooting..waiting

Assumption The Software Update Role is installed and working for deploying Windows Updates If not..enjoy anyways and I have another presentation for that!

Navigate to Software Library -> Overview -> Operating Systems – Operating System Images, select the Image that you wish to update, and click Schedule Updates from the ribbon. How to get the updates in the OS

CBS Updates The updates must be deployed in the ConfigMgr 2012 environment. The updates have not been applied to the image file Click Next On the choose Updates page, select the updates that you wish to add to your image. The list only contains updates that meets the following criteria:

Select a time for the servicing to occur: As soon as possible or Custom Schedule (Off-peak hrs) click Next. If you are extra worried…uncheck the Update DP box then manually update later

Confirm the settings….. And… click Next and Close

After a refresh you can see it changed to “Scheduled” Refresh a few minutes later: it changes to “In Process” Let’s watch the Action

It’s LOG time!!!!

~25 minutes later “Successful” The properties on the image now show the installed updates

Log review on Primary Site Server: OfflineServicingMgr.log Worried about your.wim being corrupted? It makes a backup.. If it can’t update the.wim with the updates it doesn’t copy it back to the original directory

Note the number of updates applied and the “succeeded” part!

Cleanup: Configuration Manager should remove the temp folders when it’s complete…but it’s always good to check. The location is here in the OfflineServicingMgr.log : I did find a remnant…
