GLOBAL WARMING DEFINITONS Can you accurately explain/describe Global Warming?

GLOBAL WARMING CAUSES and EFFECTS

DEFINE GLOBAL WARMING ?

GLOBAL WARMING The gradual, continuing, average annual increase in the temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere and oceans. It is believed to be caused by the ‘greenhouse effect’

GREENHOUSE EFFECT An increase in the levels of pollutants in the atmosphere (such as carbon dioxide and chlorofluorocarbons) – which form a layer in the upper atmosphere. This layer acts similar to the glass in a greenhouse; trapping the sun’s rays; thus, increasing the temperature of the atmosphere.

GREENHOUSE GASES Pollutants caused mainly by the burning of fossil fuels (such as wood, coal, and petroleum) which contribute to the Greenhouse Effect. Other GHG’s include Methane and Ozone

Other points about Global Warming that you will need to know for the exam ….

Global Warming is not a yearly (or annual) increase in global temperatures. It is an increase in the average annual temperatures over a relatively long period of time..

This means that the earth does not get warmer every year (annually). It is a gradual process that takes place over many decades.

WHAT is really the MAIN CAUSE of GLOBAL WARMING? ?

PEOPLE! OVERPOPULATION is the major, or root cause of global warming.

The OZONE layer is separate topic from global warming. It is not really closely connected with the causes and effects of global warming.

However – OZONE gas is a form of pollutant It is generated by industry and automobiles. So OZONE pollution could be considered a contributing cause of global warming…. A ‘greenhouse gas’

Methane Gas is also considered a Greenhouse Gas It is mainly generated by: a)GARBAGE LANDFILLS b)The rear-end of cattle

REVIEW the “CURRENT WORLD’s ENERGY SOURCES chart (that Aj. Gordon wrote on the whiteboard) Fossil fuels account now for about 80% of the world’s energy sources Burning of fossil fuels is the major cause of greenhouse gases

Fossil fuels are non-renewable Developing RENEWABLE energy sources are the key to stopping global warming These sources are not major contributing factors to global warming

But currently only about 17% of the world’s energy sources come from renewable sources Such as: solar power (.1%) Wind (.5%) Hydro (3%) biomass (10%)
