2 Education Equality (Not) During the 1950s and before, African American children and White children could not attend the same schools. African American schools had old books, no buses and few supplies.

3 Brown vs Board of Education Linda Brown In 1954, Linda Brown’s parents asked the school board in Topeka, Kansas to let their daughter go to the all white school. The school board would not let her attend the school Linda’s parents sued the Topeka Board of Education

4 Thurgood Marshall A lawyer named Thurgood Marshall took the case of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka to the Supreme Court.

5 Brown vs Board of Education Thurgood Marshall told the court that segregated schools were not equal. He said the 14 th Amendment was not being followed which gave equality to all citizens

6 Desegregation In 1954 the Supreme Court ruled that schools were to be desegregated and students could attend all schools.

7 Civil Rights This ruling was one of the first to be decided on civil rights for African Americans.
