1 COMMUNITY LEVEL DATA FIJI

2 INTRODUCTION Prior to implementing any development program in an area, ground information is critical. Hence Tikina Profile was initiated to provide alternative source of information [Long drought - Agriculture Census] The concept paper for the Tikina Profile was endorsed by management in December 2003 and work started in 2004. Ministry mandated Extension Division to conduct and implement the community profile activities.

3 Purpose: To provide basic information as input to policy makers and planners for community level development To facilitate decisions for the establishment of Rural Market Centers. Facilitate deploying staff and measurement of staff performance. Gender Development Provide a database for individual farmers in the country and be updated and maintained by Extension resources

4 Objectives To gauge the spread of development geographically To identify and utilize available resources in the district [COMMUNITY] To identify potential area for development To promote development approach (participatory/partnership)

5 Beneficiaries Government Private Sector NGOs Foreign Institutions [e.g. ACIAR used this data for development of economic models based on land use policies for smallholder farm; 2006-2008]

6 Major Components Demographic Information Crops/Livestock Biophysical (Land Maps) Note * Contribution by Bureau of Statistics

7 Natural Resources Component Land Marine and River resources Other natural attraction (ecotourism)

8 Advantages Promote sustainable use of Natural resources Mobilize available local resources in the development process. Enhance efficiency in the service. Empowerment of rural people Promote Productivity

9 Disadvantages Lots of traditional protocols in place that we need to follow Need more money because we think it’s a duplication [Data sources are in place Pop Census, Ag Census, Zone Nurses, other ad hoc surveys [PRA reports] etc Response rate is not complete due to movement of people & commitment

10 Target Undertake surveys to prioritize tikinas as recommended by government [ Program is currently shelved to date however Govt is keen in pursuing this activity after the census]

11 Survey Methodology Interview Individual farm household [Complete Survey]

12 ACTIVITIES Started with Cane belt areas [4 provinces] – Expiry Land Issues Bua Province – [Rural Mkt Centres, Infrastructure, Pine logging other cash crops] Other randomly selected tikinas
