2 Interviews Purpose Decide on a Purpose What kind of results do you expect? How do you plan on using them? Will this be an effective method to gather data?

3 Interviews Uses Provide first-hand accounts of events Authoritative interpretations of events, issues Reactions of people affects by events, issues

4 Interviews Should you conduct one? Will a first-hand report strengthen paper? Is the opportunity available? Can it be effectively conducted?

5 Interviews Whom do I ask? Depends on the kind of information you seek General information? Speak to a number of people. Pithy quotation from an authority?

6 Interviews Plan ahead before setting up meeting. 1.Write a script of what to say. 2.Prepare list of dates you’re available. 3.Estimate time required for the interview. 4.Be ready to suggest a location. 5.Leave phone number and/or email address.

7 Interviews What to ask Consider: Your research question, your role, the kind of information you want? Background information or opinion? Write all this down in your notes.

8 Interviews What to ask Ask questions that require more than “Yes” or “No.” e.g. - a. “What factors will affect your vote?” or b. “Will you vote in the next election?” See: Good Questions, Bad QuestionsGood Questions, Bad Questions
