1 Ch. 15.1 Waves Transfer Energy

2 Vocabulary Wave – A disturbance that transfers energy
Medium – any substance a wave moves through Mechanical wave – a wave that transfers energy through matter Transverse wave – a wave that travels at right angles to the direction of the disturbance Longitudinal wave – a wave that travels in the same direction as the disturbance

3 Energy can be kinetic or potential
Kinetic – the energy of motion. A moving object has the most kinetic energy at the point where it moves the fastest. Potential – Stored energy; the energy an object has due to its position, molecular arrangement, or chemical composition.

4 Wave Characteristics Transfers energy over entire distance
Matter moves in place Examples Sound waves Light waves Water waves Nonexample Ball rolling Water rushing downstream

5 15.1 Transverse Wave direction of disturbance direction of wave
Waves transfer energy. Transverse Wave direction of disturbance direction of wave transfer of energy wave medium mechanical wave transverse wave longitudinal wave CHAPTER RESOURCES SIMULATION Simulate the effect different degrees of force have on a wave. SECTION OUTLINE

6 Medium Characteristics Examples Nonexample All materials
Water – ocean wave Ground – earthquake wave Rope – rope wave Nonexample A wave itself

7 Energy and Waves Forces move a medium up and down or back and forth.
A wave moves forward.

8 Waves can be classified by how they move
Transverse wave – the direction in which the wave travels is perpendicular, or at right angles, to the direction of the disturbance Ex) rope wave, water wave Transverse = “across” or “crosswise”

9 Waves can be classified by how they move
Longitudinal – the wave travels in the same direction as the disturbance Started in a spring by moving it forward & backward Sometimes called compression waves, because bunched up area is known as a compression Ex) sound waves, waves on a spring

10 15.1 Longitudinal Wave direction of disturbance direction of wave
