7 Profile Essay Profile: An essay that is similar to the “Remembering an Event” essay, but different because the experiences and details are not about the writer –but someone/something else. You will describe someone or something. Check p.168-188 “Description” for more information You will use a lot of adjectives and adverbs p.473-477

8 Profile Essay 1.Provides a detailed look at one person or one thing. 2.Reveals information about a person or thing through descriptions and examples. 3. You may use dialogue (talking) or quotes. Descriptions of scenes and settings also reveal useful information. 4. A strong introduction is important to get the reader's attention. 5. You may want to interview a person. Or, if you choose an object, you will want to study it. The more time spent with the subject, the better the paper will be.

9 9 TOEFL Writing Question 2: Independent Task Essay based on your own personal experience and ideas. Rang of topics – politics, health, economy, business, education, the environment, social issues 30 minutes, 300+ words long. Introduction Body: main part of the essay - should give your reasons with details that support your opinion. Conclusion: restate your view and summarize the reasons you gave to support it.

17 17 Writing your essay Steps Directions like this: Decide on your topic. Prepare an outline or diagram of your ideas. Write your thesis statement. Write the body. Write the main points. Write the subpoints. Elaborate on the subpoints. Write the introduction. Write the conclusion. Add the finishing touches.

18 18 Peer Review What is their hook? Circle it. What is their thesis? Circle it. What are their topic sentences? Circle them. What is their topic? Write it. What is their opinion about the topic? Write it. Give them feedback! Help them to correct spelling, or make something more clear.

19 Journal 1 Do you prefer to shop online or at a real store? Write a short essay comparing and contrasting the experience of shopping at these two different kinds of stores. Use specific reasons and examples to illustrate the stores' similarities and differences. Write 250+ words and make sure there is a thesis, introductory sentence, and concluding sentence

20 A Nice Story It was a nice day so nice Mary decided to go for a nice walk in the nice park near her nice hotel. She thought it was a nice idea to nicely phone her nice friend Chris so that after their nice walk they could go for a nice coffee in one of the nice cafes which were near the edge of the nice town. The nice neighborhood was nicely famous for nice souvenirs.

22 A Nice Story: Example It was a fine spring day so studious Mary decided to go for a brisk walk in the botanical park near her 5 star hotel. She thought it was an excellent idea to suddenly phone her best friend Chris so that after their power walk they could go for an authentic coffee in one of the traditional cafes which were near the edge of the Italian town. The local neighborhood was especially famous for coffee-related souvenirs.

23 A Great Story It was a great great day in the great countryside in the great land of greatness. Two great friends decided to greatly eat some great great dishes. However there was a great great man blocking their way. They had to speak to him greatly to greatly calm him down. After several great minutes the great man greatly backed away and greatly said “sorry to disturb you”. The great friends were grateful and greatly continued their great day.

25 25 Essay 1: Peer Reviews A peer review is when you change essays with a partner and correct each others mistakes and give each other feedback. Check for: The heading (single space, name, class section, professor, and date) The title (is it interesting?) Paragraph indentations (5 spaces for new paragraphs, or press Tab button) Spelling, grammar, double spaced, 12 point Times New Roman, 550-650 words Do they have introduction with thesis and hook? Do they have 3 paragraphs body, with 3 topic sentences? Do they have a conclusion with closing statement?

26 26 Essay 2: Goal To inform the reader about something (a person, place, or thing) Try to teach them something interesting Try to use a lot of adjectives and adverbs to describe something in detail

27 27 Essay 2: Topic examples a person: Someone you know is better. If you don't know them it could be difficult. You will have to describe this person in detail. a place: A place you know is better. Difficult if you haven’t been there. You need to study this place. : a thing: Something you can personally observe. You can see it first hand. You will watch it closely and describe it in detail. Note: Don't use events or subjects.

Writing a Profile (550-650 words) You will describe something or someone. 3. Proposing a Solution (650-750 words) You will discuss a problem and explain how to fix it 4. Justifying an Evaluation (550-650 words) You will give evidence to support a decision. 5.Portfolio You will choose 5 journal entries to put in your portfolio. 6. Journal Entries These will be given by the instructor. They will cover various topics.
